Around 600 London taxi cabs have been taken off the capital's roads for safety checks. 9 London cab drivers have now reported sudden engine fires over the last three months, with more instances elsewhere in the country.
Transport for London has taken the drastic step of suspending the licences of all the cabs that may potentially carry a fault: TX4 cabs registered between September 2006 and March 2007 are affected. The TX4 is built in Coventry by London Taxi International (LTI). A TfL spokesman said today; "The safety of London's black cab drivers and their passengers is our top priority. We have therefore written to all affected taxi owners to advise them that we will suspend the licence of any cab which has not passed this inspection by the deadline set".

TfL went on to say that it may have to withdraw its approval of this type of vehicle.
