Mercedes-Benz BlueTec EEV trucks

* Actros EEV available from autumn 2009

* Retrofit solution available for Actros BlueTec 5 trucks supplied from 2005 onwards

* Particulate emissions reduced by a third compared to Euro 5



In Germany there is currently much debate about promoting commercial vehicles that comply with the voluntary EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle) emission standard in addition to the Euro 5 emission standard. Subsidies are available for these vehicles in the Netherlands. The particulate-emission limits specified by the EEV standard are around a third lower than those stipulated by the already stringent Euro 5 standard. Mercedes-Benz EEV trucks will be available from October 2009.

The range of BlueTec EEV vehicles available ex factory includes road-going Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks with outputs of 300 kW (408 hp), 320 kW (435 hp) and 335 kW (456 hp) and the Mercedes-Benz Axor with outputs of 210 kW (286 hp) and 240 kW (326 hp). The technology needed to meet the requirements of the voluntary EEV emission standard is based on the new BlueTec 5 diesel technology from Mercedes-Benz.

Additional exhaust-gas aftertreatment is not required. Mercedes-Benz Actros BlueTec 5 trucks supplied since 2005 have already been prepared for EEV and can be retrofitted in Mercedes-Benz workshops from October 2009 onwards, after which they will receive an EEV certificate. The retrofit solution is based on BlueTec 5 technology and only requires minor hardware and software modifications.
Mercedes-Benz is also looking at introducing EEV solutions based on BlueTec 5 for its Atego trucks weighing 12 t equipped with engines from the 900 series.

In terms of maintenance, service life, fuel consumption, weight and installation space, the EEV solution for Mercedes-Benz trucks is on a par with the proven BlueTec 5 technology. EEV solutions with additional exhaust-gas aftertreatment are not likely to be attractive for most truck fleets as the cost, weight, installation space, maintenance and possible increase in diesel consumption all have a negative impact on overall economy.
