Toyota is to build its new Camry Hybrid at its factories in Altona, near Melbourne and near Bangkok, Thailand. Production will start in Thailand in 2009, where Toyota plans to produce 9000 cars a year, and in Australia in 2010, where 10,000 Camry Hybrids a year will be made alongside the mainstream Camry saloon and the Aurion.
Toyota's Gateway plant in Thailand also makes the Camry, Corolla, Soluna, Vios, Wish and Yaris for the Asian region.
Though only small numbers of the Camry Hybrid will be built, this model is part of Toyota's plan to sell over one million hybrids a year next decade. The company 'is working to put in place an optimal hybrid vehicle production system worldwide,' it said today.
