The 50th Daytona 500 is fast approaching folks. Im starting to get all giddy here. Im looking forward to a lot of things like how much of an impact Dale Earnhardt Jr. will make with Hendrick Motorsports, how Kyle Busch is going to exact revenge against the team who let him go and how the Car of Tomorrow will fare on the course. But one of those things that need to be looked into is the attempt of a 49-year old racing legend to win what he almost won last year.
Mark Martin almost had it. It was actually within his grasp. He was just seconds away from crossing the finish line of the last lap. If it wasnt for that disastrous crash that happened behind him he would have had a chance. He was already in the lead. Some critics said that had NASCAR stopped the race while Martin was still running first, he probably wouldve been your Dayton 500 champion last year. But as the saying goes, not everything ends happily ever after. So the race went on and it was Kevin Harvick who would make the most out of the situation and conquer Daytona leaving Martin to wallow in second place. A lot of his contemporaries were rooting for him to win. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of them. Same goes for Dale Jarrett and Jeff Gordon. Who wouldnt? Its like watching your old man put on a show and almost conquer the young lions of his sport. It wouldve have been a nice fairy-tale ending for one of NASCARs legendary drivers.
But dont count him out yet. Not just yet. Mark Martin wants to win it all this year. He wants to conquer the lions and take control of the Daytona 500 jungle. Thats the only desire fueling him this year to pull it off. That, and probably to have last years debacle erased from the memory of every NASCAR racing fan.
