To be the man, youve got to beat the man! Ric Flair made that phrase famous in wrestling. And Carl Edwards just made it famous for NASCAR by racing his way to victory at the Auto Club 500, held in Fontana California, over Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.
Coming from third place and driving his No. 99 Ford, Edwards won by outracing Johnson with 13 laps left in the race. Edwards came off the final pit stop and raced past teammate Jamie McMurray in lap 225, then past Jeff Gordon for second place in lap 233, and then finally met up with Johnson in lap 236. The two racers were tied for two laps until Edwards was able to pull away for the victory. It was a bitter loss for Johnson who was actually in the lead coming out of the final pit stop with 26 laps remaining. This victory is Edwards first Auto Club 500 win and his seventh top 10 finish in eight starts.
While Johnson finished at second, his teammate Jeff Gordon placed himself at third despite leading the race last Sunday. Kyle Busch landed at the fourth place and Matt Kenseth, who won the last two February races, finished at fifth
Marred by rain, the Auto Club 500 was supposed to conclude on Sunday. The drivers waited for the rain to die out and the tracks to dry causing the race to be delayed for 2 hours. But heavy rain prevented the drivers from finishing the race. Due to an hour-long downpour and a five-hour waiting after it ended, officials called it quits by 11 p.m. and decided to postpone the race for Monday. Due to the bad weather, a total of only 25,000 fans showed up for Mondays race. The estimated number was set at 120,000.
So the next time you see Carl Edwards on the race track dont be surprised to see him grinning from ear-to-ear because of this win.
