This years Daytona 500 scored big by drawing in the fifth-highest rating of all time for Fox. Aside from notching the fifth highest rating, the 2008 Daytona was the second highest-rated Daytona for television network. No surprise there. I mean, who wouldnt tune in to see if Kevin Harvick could repeat last years win or if Mark Martin could finally achieve his dream of winning the big one. Plus youve got the other racers like the Busch brothers Kyle and Kurt, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson racing as well.
Anyway, based on the information provided by the Nielsen Media Research, an outstanding 17.8 million viewers watched the nationally televised race this year. The rating the Daytona 500 garnered this year showed significant improvement from last years race, which brought in around 17.5 million viewers. The 10.1/20 rating it got ranked no. 11 among prime time shows and is similar to the ratings garnered by the World Series. The 2008 rating even beat out the ratings earned by the following sports events: the NFL regular season, the NCAA Final Four, the NBA Finals, the final round of the Masters and the Kentucky Derby. All five events only managed to pull in an average rating of 8.4 to 9.7.
Aside from the record-breaking numbers it gave Fox, the 2008 Daytona also made history by being the fifth most watched race of all time. Also, based on the data gathered by network news, 33.5 million Americans tuned to watch at least a portion of the race. Thats how interesting and riveting this 2008 campaign was that you had to catch at least a part of it so you wont feel left out of the loop. So, all together now: Hurrah!
