1934 Grand Prix de Monaco

As the first Grande preuve of the 1934 Grand Prix season, Monaco was, and has always been, a dramatic venue on the Mediterranean Sea.

It is one of few city courses in the world and considered the most prestigious of all the Grand Prixs. The Monaco Grand Prixs started in 1929 and it is still run today.

For this April 2nd race, a few of the cars running needed modification to meet the new 750kg rules. Both the Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union teams decided they would not participate in any racing until the May 27th Avusrennen.

From the flag, the race lead changed hands quite often between the Bugatti T59 of Ren Dreyfus and the Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo P3s of Louis Chiron and Guy Moll.

Later in the race, while Chiron was in front, he had a slight off at the Station Hairpin, relinquishing his lead to Moll, who kept his position till race end.

It was a great start for this talented and popular 24-year-old Algerian rookie Scuderia Ferrari driver.

The Bugatti Queen

Hell Nice (born Mariette Hlne Delangle) was born on 15 December 1900 in Aunay-sous-Auneau, Eure-et-Loir, France.

At the age of 16, she moved to Paris and eventually became a successful dancer in the city's music halls. As her fame and popularity grew, she performed throughout Europe, and spent time with the rich and famous, such as Philippe de Rothschild, Jean Bugatti and Count Bruno d'Harcourt.

She love speed, and was an avid skier. Unfortunately a skiing accident damaged her knee and ended her dancing career. She quickly turned to racing cars, winning some races and breaking some speed records.

After a tour through the United States, where she raced a Miller racing car, she was introduced by de Rothschild to Bugatti. This lead Nice to race Bugattis, usually against men. Between 1931 and 1936, she raced Bugattis and Alfa Romeos.

In Brazil for two Grand Prix races, she had a major crash in her Alfa Romeo, but miraculously survived after a three-day coma.

After recovering, she competed in various endurance trials for Yacco, breaking ten records that still stand today.

During World War II, Hell Nice moved to Nice. In 1949, Nice attended a party celebrating the first post-war Monte Carlo Rallye. During the evening, driver Louis Chiron publically accused Nice of being an agent of the Gestapo.

With these accusations, Nice was dropped by her sponsors and her friends. Her life collapsed around her and she live out her last decades in a back-alley apartment in complete poverty, under a fictitious name. She died penniless and alone in 1984.

In 2001, author Miranda Seymour came across some material on Nice and decided she should be honoured with a biography The Bugatti Queen: In Search of a Motor-Racing Legend in 2004. In her research, Seymour found no evidence of Chiron's claims.

In September 2010, a proper grave marker was placed at her grave in a celebration of her life and great accomplishments.

In doing renovations recently in our home, I was left with a blank canvas after I pulled up our old carpet. I decided to honour Hell Nice's accomplishments with a sketch.

The new carpet was laid down over the sketch, waiting for years from now when new owners will discover this important personality.

ALfa Romeo

Concept car that is often exhibited by a manufacturer-car manufacturers often appear extremely futuristic. It is not only happening in the present course.

Because the cars epoch can also find out he has a futuristic ideas though made in the old days when technology was not as sophisticated as this.

Innovation concept cars that was both design and technology also deserves thumbs up. Below we present seven older but the concept car concept futuristic:

1. B.A.T. 7

The car that was launched in Turin in 1954 uses three Alfa Romeo cars as a base Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica designed by Franco Scaglione of the famous design house Bertone.

With half-closed and the wheels on the rear wing, BAT 7 looks like a car from another planet. Even so, Bertone claims to make design a car like this long-needed study aerodynamics.

2. Sting Ray

Cars made by GM design chief Bill Mitchell is made to show courage in the world GM is racing. Evidenced by the participation of this car in 1959 and 1960.

Armed with the chassis of the Corvette SS picked then wrapped with a new body, Sting Ray cool present and those who see it.

Three. Ford Mustang I

Progenitor legendary Ford Mustang muscle car was originally built in 1962 upon the idea of Roy Lunn and Frank Theyleg to rival sports car owned by MG and Alfa Romeo. This car initially apply only a small Ford Taunus V4 engine with four-speed manual transmission that can only produce 109 hp.

4. Cadillac Cyclone

Futuristic cars made in 1959 so this seemed like an airplane. Outside the body of this car is already equipped with fins at the stern with a front bumper with exhaust-style fighters who are now in the front section near the front wheels.

Moreover, thanks to the cabin door and transparent application, this car can give up the sensation of climbing a fighter plane. Moreover, this car is also equipped with communication devices that can make this car passengers to communicate with people outside the car without having to open canopy of the car.

5. GM Firebird III
This car is a car that is very special with the leading specifications that have been made. And just like the Cadillac Cyclone, a car made in 1959 was also very inspired by fighter aircraft. That's why this car looks more like a jet fighter than a car.

A side car until the fin on the back and the cabin is designed in the style of fighter jets. To control this car, we are not necessary to use a steering wheel but simply use the joystick like on the plane with all the attributes that have been computerized.

6. Ferrari Modulo

Designed in Pininfarina design house and is shown at the Geneva Auto Show 1970, Ferrari Modulo looks like a space module and not like a Ferrari in general. But if you see a powerful 550 hp V12 engine, the doubt on this car would disappear immediately.

7. Aero-Vette

Looking at the long history of Corvette, this car could be said as one of the best concept cars from American manufacturers. Armed with fantastic body and gullwing doors, Aero-Vette look very exotic.

GM design boss affairs, Bill Mitchell even had prepared a car who first shown in 1977 was to be mass produced by machine applications small-block V-8 to cut the selling price in the future. But unfortunately the program in cencel for a reason.

1934 Eifelrennen Formule Libre

At the Nurburgring track, bad weather delayed this important race by a few hours.

Mercedes-Benz was making its first official entry into the Grand Prix season at this event after extensive testing and adjustment of the new W25.

Team manager Alfred Neubauer was feeling the pressure to succeed in their homeland. Their star driver had not yet fully recovered enough from his 1933 Monaco crash to participate so Mercedes brought in a new driver
Manfred Georg Rudolf von Brauchitsch, along with Luigi Fagioli to drive their new racer.

Auto Union had Hans Stuck, Hermann zu Leiningen and August "Bubi" Momberger to drive their Type A.

Scuderia Ferrari had Louis Chiron and Mario Tadini driving the Alfa Romeo P3. Bugatti had no entries in the race, and nor did Maserati.

Three classes of cars were racing together, flagged off one class after another, a total of forty-four cars in all.

Italian Fagioli took an early lead until he was ordered by team manager Neubauer to let his German teammate
von Brauchitsch by. Later in the pits for fueling, Fagioli argued furiously with Neubauer over this. He started off again, but with only one lap remaining in the race, he pulled over and abandoned his race car in protest.

With two Auto Unions out of the race, Stuck had taken the sole remaining Type A to a sizeable lead over von Brauchitsch. Some believed he would go non-stop and win the race. He finally did have to come in for fuel and tires, and the Mercedes driver took the lead, which he would keep to the checkered flag.

The win was a stunning debut for both the Mercedes-Benz team and their new driver.

1934 Belgian Grand Prix

Race enthusiast had great expectations for the Belgian Grand Prix, held on the stunning Spa-Francorchamps track.

Unfortunately, Belgian customs officials demanded a heavy duty from the German Grand Prix teams for their alcohol-based racing fuel. The result was a withdrawal of both the Mercedes-Benz and the Auto Union teams from the race.

This made for a very small grid of seven cars; three Bugatti T59s, two Alfa Romeo P3s, a Maserati 8CM and a Montier-Ford Special.

Raymond Sommer was the only Maserati driver present, so that the real race was going to be between the Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeos and the Bugattis.

As the typically rainy race began, Louis Chiron took the lead in the Alfa Romeo, with the Bugattis pitting with fouled plugs.

It looked very much like another Scuderia Ferrari win in the works. Unfortunately, Chirons racer slid off the track and overturned; he was luckily uninjured in the incident.

Achille Varzi took comfortably over his teammates lead, and at the same time, the track record. This was not to last, with his smoking Alfa Romeo coming in with a blown engine.

With their only real opposition out of the way, the Bugattis of Ren Dreyfus and Antonio Brivio cruised in first and second, with Sommer a distant third for Maserati.

It was to be one of the very rare top-level wins for Bugatti in 1934.

1934 Italian Grand Prix

The Italian Grand Prix was held on September 9th at the Autodromo Di Monza. In the previous years Grand Prix, serious accidents had taken the lives of Giuseppe Campari and two other drivers. To lessen the speeds, it was decided that the track should be shortened from 10kms to 4.3kms, with many chicanes added in. With 500kms to cover for the Grand Prix, this made for a longer, more grueling race.

Mercedes had their W25, Bugatti their Type 59, Scuderia Ferrari the Alfa P3, while Maserati introduced the new model 6C-34, to be driven by Tazio Nuvolari. The balance of their team would drive the 8CMs.

At the start, Hans Stuck took an early lead for Auto Union but was soon overtaken by Mercedes driver Rudolf Caracciola. His teammate Manfred Georg Rudolf von Brauchitsch was not competing, having been injured in a crash at the previous Swiss Grand Prix. Battling amongst the leaders were Luigi Fagioli (Mercedes), Archille Varzi (Alfa Romeo), Nuvolari (Maserati) and Count Carlo Felice Trossi (Alfa Romeo).

Unfortunately for Nuvolari, the Maserati mechanics forgot to top-up his car's brake fluid after weigh-in, so he slowly lost his brakes during the long race.

The 4.75 hour race, with its 1600 total corners, took a toll on the drivers and the cars. Fagioli, whose car broke down, later replaced Caracciola, who had to be lifted out of his car. Stuck had to be replaced by zu Leiningen, and Trossi by Comotti.

Varzi dropped out with mechanical woes, so the race finished with Caracciola/Figioli in first place, Stuck/zu Leiningen in second, with Trossi/Comotti in third. After 4th place Chiron (Alfa Romeo), Nuvolari finished a respectable 5th place, using his gears to brake for the last half of the race.

Avus Formule Libre Race 1934

Enzo Ferrari was looking for an advantage over the sleek machines of Mercedes and Auto Union at the Formule Libre race at Avus in Berlin on May 24th, 1934.

Pen&ink, markers and pencil on white archival stock 12"x 9"
 Paul Chenard 2010
Original sketch available, as is the limited edition.

The banked Avus track was known for its high speed, so Ferrari commissioned Cesare Pallavicino from the Breda Aircraft Company to design a streamline body for one of the Alfa Romeo P3s. Guy Moll would drive this special Aerodinamica for Scuderia Ferrari.

Before the race, the Mercedes W25s were withdrawn with fuel pump problems. With rain falling at the start of the race, the Auto Union Type-A of Hans Stuck quickly took the lead.

As the rain stopped and the track dried, Moll started catching the leaders. He passed teammates Varzi, then Chiron, who later dropped out with a broken oil pipe. He then took the lead from Stuck, who lasted only two more laps before his clutch failed.

Moll took the race, almost a minute and a half lead over the second place Varzi, much to the chagrin of the hometown crowd.

Sadly, this fine driver lost his life at the Coppa Acerbo in August of the same season.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta Gets Two New Power Units for Paris

Alfa Romeo has announced that it will head to the Paris Motor Show with new engine options for the Giulietta. The engines are made up by a 2.0 liter JTDM powerplant that makes 140hp while the other engine is the 170hp 1.4 liter MultiAir turbocharged petrol unit.

While the styling remains unchanged, the biggest addition is a twin-clutch transmission. Dubbed TCT, the gearbox "guarantees driving comfort and a sporty feeling well above those offered by conventional automatic transmissions, but also improved efficiency and lower consumption levels." It will be available on the 1.4-liter MultiAir and the new 2.0-liter JTDM.

When equipped with the new 140-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo diesel, the Giulietta hatchback returns an average fuel consumption of just 4.5lt/10km (equal to 52.3mpg US) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

Other Alfa show exhibits include the revised 159 saloon and estate, equipped with a newly Euro 5-compliant 134bhp JDTm-2 diesel engine.

Press Release

Alfa Romeo at the 2010 Paris International Motor Show

Giulietta, the safest compact car in the world according to Euro NCAP, is being launched with a new 140 HP Diesel 2.0JTDM-2 and the Alfa TCT twin clutch automatic transmission

The Giulietta, the safest compact car in the world according to Euro NCAP, is the star of the Alfa Romeo stand with two world debuts: the brand-new 140 HP 2.0 JTDM and the 170 HP 1.4 MultiAir turbo petrol with "Alfa TCT" automatic transmission.
The already extensive range of engines available for the Giulietta is complemented by the launch of a new 140 HP turbodiesel that records low emissions (only 119 g/km), low fuel consumption (4.5 litres/100 km over a combined cycle) and an outstanding torque delivery (in Dynamic 350 Nm at just 1750 rpm). A versatile engine well-suited to the needs of fleets and private users.
The second new product is a dry twin clutch automatic transmission which guarantees driving comfort and a sporty feeling well above those offered by conventional automatic transmissions, but also improved efficiency and lower consumption levels. The Alfa TCT will be combined with a petrol version (170 HP 1.4 MultiAir present on the stand) and later also with a diesel version (170 HP 2.0 JTDM). In addition the brand-new Alfa TCT, first applied to the Alfa Mito, is combined with the Start&Stop system in order to minimise consumption levels and CO2 emissions (121 g/km for the 170 HP 1.4 MultiAir).
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was designed with two souls', one more sporty and capable of expressing great agility over the most demanding routes, and one more functional, with qualities of roominess and comfort on everyday roads. These performances are achieved by the new Compact architecture which, thanks to the sophisticated technical solutions employed for the suspension, the dual pinion active steering, the sturdy and light materials used and the manufacturing technologies implemented, allows the Giulietta to achieve excellent levels both in terms of on-board comfort and dynamics and safety features (active and passive). It is no coincidence that the car has achieved the prestigious 5 Euro NCAP stars and an overall score of 87/100 with the new 2010 rating: an extraordinary result that makes it the safest compact ever.
Two other versions of the Giulietta will be lined up on the stand at the Paris Show: a 105 HP Distinctive 1.6 JTDM and a Quadrifoglio Verde with a 235 HP 1750 TBi engine. The first engine is dedicated to all those in search of a car with character and a distinctive style, affording the typical agility and handling of an Alfa Romeo yet able to combine these qualities with limited running costs. The 105 HP 1.6 JTDM is a flexible and eco-friendly diesel engine that will surprise customers due to its prompt response (in Dynamic mode, the max. torque is a generous 320 Nm at just 1750 rpm) combined with extremely low fuel consumption (in the extra-urban cycle, it is just 3.7 l/100 km). This is possible thanks to the combination of MultiJet 2 technology and the Start&Stop system.
Separate mention must be made of the high performance 235 HP 1750 TBi combined with the exclusive Quadrifoglio Verde trim level, a legendary symbol which has competed on tracks all over the world. Only available on this engine type, this special version is distinguished by its sporty lowered ride height (15 mm lower at the front and 10 mm at the rear), 17" wheels (18"as an option), an enhanced braking system with calipers painted Alfa red, as well as unique interiors which include sporty leather and microfibre upholstery. All designed to guarantee the best in driving pleasure and segment-leading active and passive safety. Fuel consumption is also low considering the power level of this engine. The Quadrifoglio Verde is thus reinterpreted with a modern touch, combining the utmost driving pleasure with greater environmental awareness for an eco-conscious and environmentally-friendly sportiness.
In detail, the 1750 turbo petrol engine boasts advanced technical solutions including direct fuel injection, dual continuous variable valve timing, a turbocharger and a revolutionary scavenging control system that gets rid of any turbo lag. The resulting performance is comparable to - or better than - that of many 3 litre engines while still delivering fuel consumption typical of a compact four cylinder unit. It is worth noting that the specific power of 134 HP/litre represents the highest ever achieved by an Alfa Romeo production engine. The specific torque, amounting to 195 Nm/litre, is also the highest of all petrol engines in this category, while the maximum torque of 340 Nm, reached at just 1900 rpm, is excellent by any standards.
Visitors to the stand can also admire a Giulietta equipped with Blue&Me-TomTom, the only fully integrated portable info-entertainment system that, in addition to map navigation, can be used by means of an up-to-date colour touch screen plus steering wheel and voice commands to manage the telephone, navigation and all information needed while driving, enhancing and exploiting Blue&Me features and ensuring maximum driving safety.

MiTo sportiness becomes even more eco-friendly

The spotlights will also be focused on the Alfa Romeo MiTo, which will be represented at the Paris Show by two cars with a Distinctive trim level. The first vehicle is equipped with a 135 HP 1.4 MultiAir turbo petrol combined with an Alfa TCT automatic transmission with dry twin clutch and the Start&Stop system that temporarily turns off the engine during stops. This Alfa Romeo MiTo offers outstanding performance (7.1 l/100 km over an urban cycle, 126 g/km of CO2 and 8.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h), a result that is even better than the same engine with a manual gearbox (the values are 7.4 l/100 km, 129 g/km and 8.4 seconds). It should be emphasised that the MiTo was the first car to offer the revolutionary MultiAir engine and also to combine the 135 HP 1.4 MultiAir turbo petrol with the Alfa TCT transmission and Start&Stop system.
The second Alfa Romeo MiTo on the stand is equipped with a 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet engine in the ECO version. This may be distinguished from the same engine in the range by its optimised fuel consumption, achieved by special engine tuning and gear ratios. This gives rise to a reduction in fuel consumption (from 4.3 to 4.0 l/100 km over a combined cycle) and CO2 emissions (from 112 to 104 g/km). The performance levels are unchanged and remain among the best in the category: 180 km/h top speed and 11.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
Both cars on show offer sophisticated leather upholstery, the Premium Pack (steering wheel controls, front armrest with compartment, dual zone automatic climate control, parking sensors and Cruise Control) and the Sport Pack (spoiler, sport rear bumper, fog lights, sports instrument panel and 18" wheels for the 135 HP 1.4 MultiAir and 17" wheels for the 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet ECO). The info-telematic equipment on board the two MiTo cars is different: the 1.4 MultiAir version is equipped with the Blue&Me system and RadioNav satellite navigation system that constitutes the new generation of entertainment and satellite navigation developed by Magneti Marelli for Alfa Romeo. The system incorporates a satellite navigation system, radio with dual tuner, one dedicated to traffic information reception (TMC), the CD MP3 player and European maps loaded onto a SD card that speeds up data access and route calculation times. To guarantee the greater sharpness and definition of images, it is equipped with a high-definition 6.5 inch colour display. Visitors to the motor show can admire on the second MiTo on show the Blue&Me-TomTom, the latest development of the Blue&Me system. This is a fully integrated system that allows you to manage telephone, navigation and all necessary driving information functions on a practical colour touch-screen. The device is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, the European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the car's other systems by means of the Blue&Me system.

Alfa Romeo 159 introduces the MY 2011 and the new 136 HP Diesel 2.0 JTDM-2 engine

The stand also features an Alfa Romeo 159 Model Year 2011. The model (saloon and Sportwagon) has recently undergone a facelift in its interior styling and has been enhanced by option packages that ensure customers a wide range of personalisation alternatives and a wealth of content. Visitors can admire a Sportwagon in the exclusive "Rosso Competizione" livery and equipped with the new 136 HP 2.0 JTDM engine (Euro 5). This new engine complements the Euro 5 diesel range for the 159 and will be positioned in the most important diesel power band within segment D in Europe. This power unit is in fact able to achieve a compromise between the needs of private customers who seek a lively yet frugal car and those of fleet customers who are concerned with running costs but do not wish to neglect comfort and driving flexibility over long distances.
The car on show is equipped with a TI Pack that adds a sporty flavour with its long list of features. In detail, the TI Pack customises the Alfa Romeo 159 exteriors with 18" "turbine" design alloy wheels (a 19" spoked design is available as an option, as on the car exhibited), low sports ride, side skirts and oversized red brake calipers. A very lively car, therefore, with exceptional roadholding. Inside, the TI environment is recognisable from the wraparound seats trimmed in black leather and Alcantara with red profiles (as an option, the sports seats may be fully trimmed in black or natural leather), sports pedal unit in aluminium and a kick plate with the TI logo, sports steering wheel in leather with radio controls, gear lever knob and handbrake lever trimmed in leather with red stitching, Blue&Me system and sports instruments. For an innovative, hi-tech look, the car on show also features new carbon fibre inserts (an option) on the central console and steering wheel.
Last but not least, brochures and customised totems at the stand will introduce visitors to the products of FGA Capital, a joint venture set up between Fiat Group Automobiles and Crdit Agricole that specialises in the automotive sector. The finance company operates within Italy and across Europe with a single mission: supporting the sales of all Fiat Group Automobiles and Chrysler brand vehicles by offering innovative financial products with high added value services dedicated to the dealership network, private customers and companies.

Alfa Giulia GTAm best Alfa Romeo ever

Alfa Romeo have made 70 models in their 100 year history. 2010 just happens to be the centenary year of the famous Italian marque, so what better time to work out which car Alfa fans (thats Alfisti to you and I) think is the best Alfa made to date. As the article title suggests the Giulia GTAm won the poll, with a narrow margin over the 8C Competizione. Voting was conducted via the Alfa Centenary website.

The Alfa Giulia GTAm, which was voted as the best Alfa veer by 20.4 per cent of the overall tally, is based on the 1750 GT Veloce production model. It managed to win the 1970 European Touring Car Championship with driver Toine Hezemans at the wheel.

Coming in a close second with 19.8 percent of the votes was the 8c Competizione supercar, the fastest and most capable Alfa Romeo to date. But that's what you'd expect from a $180,000 (123,000) supercar.

The Giulia GTAm was a great Alfa and a deserved winner. Its really interesting to see how people voted in the poll. We all have our favorites which is testament to the fantastic cars Alfa Romeo has produced over the past century. For those of you interested, the latest GTAm is on sale in dealerships across the UK.

Press release

Although Alfa Romeo has to date created more than 70 models in its rich 100 year history, it all came down to a battle between just two iconic Alfas in a poll of fans favourites, initiated to celebrate the Italian marques centenary year.

And it was the Alfa Giulia GTAm that came top of the poll, beating the 8C Competizione supercar to the chequered flag with less than one percent more of the vote.

The Alfa Giulia GTAm, which gained 20.4 per cent of the overall tally, derived from the standard 1750 GT Veloce production model, and secured its place in the Alfa Romeo elite by winning the 1970 European Touring Car Championship in the hands of Dutchman Toine Hezemans. The votes for this poll were collected from admirers and owners known as Alfisti - who submitted photos of their Alfas to the alfacentenary.co.uk website to create a unique piece of mosaic artwork.

The GTAm and Alfas current supercar, the 8C Competizione, led the way against a shortlist of classics including the 2900 B Le Mans, Alfasud and the 156 GTA.

A worthy runner-up with 19.8 per cent, the 8C Competizione - worth more than 123,000 - debuted as a concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003 and went on to be produced in 2008 as a limited edition model of just 500 examples and selling out almost immediately. The cars name derives from Alfas world famous 8 cylinder (8C) engine and the marques racing pedigree.

The Alfa Spider Duetto, widely regarded as a design classic, finished in third place with 16.01 per cent of the vote. This car was first launched in 1966 and famously starred in the legendary film The Graduate in 1967, alongside Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.

Alfa Romeo UK Brand Communications manager, Damien Dally, says: The Giulia GTAm was a great Alfa and a deserved winner. Its really interesting to see how people voted in the poll. We all have our favourites which is testament to the fantastic cars Alfa Romeo has produced over the past century.

The latest five-door Alfa Giulietta model, which takes styling cues from the iconic 8C Competizione, is now on sale in dealerships across the UK. For further information visit www.alfaromeo.co.uk

The latest Fiat and Alfa Romeo dealer news

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat and Chrysler, told reporters some non-Chrysler Group dealers may receive franchises to sell Fiats.

Marchionne spoke after President Barack Obama's appearance at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant on July 30th.

I think there's going to be a large part of the distribution that will be part of the Chrysler environment, Marchionne told reporters. There may be others that will not be Chrysler dealers.

Marchionne stressed that Fiat will be a standalone franchise.

The potential of Fiat is unique, he said. There is nothing Jeepish about the 500. It's an Italian car, and a Jeep is a Jeep.

Alfa Romeo News

He also said Fiat franchisees could also get the Alfa Romeo franchise, which will return to the United States in 2012.

Back in April, I had the opportunity to pose a question to Marchionne on how Alfa Romeo would be marketed in the US.

I asked "What was the current thinking on how Alfa Romeo will be marketed in the US, would it be combined with the Maserati dealer network?"

Marchionne answered, "...that may happen with the Maserati dealer network, but I think the single largest source of distribution capability will come through the Chrysler organization and effectively the agreement I think we have with the UST (US Treasury) and with Chrysler requires that we allow Chrysler to distribute Alfa in the United States."

Dealer selection begins soon

Chrysler expects to select new Fiat dealers in about 125 markets identified for growth potential in the small-car segment. These dealers will be located in approximately 41 states.

Dealers in the target markets will be invited to attend a meeting this month at the Chrysler Group World Headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Chrysler Group plans to officially announce its U.S. Fiat dealer network locations in September.

Alfa Romeo & the 1934 Grand Prix Season

The 1934 Grand Prix season introduce to the world a glimmer of the powerful government-subsidized German Grand Prix racing teams. Both Mercedes and Auto Union (formed by the racing union of Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer) brought new racers to battle, highlighting advanced technologies.

These new technologies were so new that they were not fully developed for the 1934 season. The very well organized Scuderia Ferrari developed and managed the Alfa Romeo racing cars for the company, and that seasons Alfa Romeo domination was the result; they won 18 out of a total 35 races.

1910 2010: Alfa Romeo celebrates a century of wins and world records

On June 24th, Alfa Romeo celebrated its 100th anniversary. Alfa Romeo has produced some of the most legendary and exciting cars ever made. From the most expensive to the least, each car produced contains this DNA.

Below are some of the highlights of this 100 year story for you to enjoy...

Alfa Romeo was officially established in Milan on 24 June 1910. That year, a group of entrepreneurs and businessmen acquired Societ Italiana Automobili Darracq, the Italian branch of the French car maker, and its Portello workshops on the city outskirts, and established A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company).

The emblem underlined the new company's ties to the city of Milan: a red cross from the city's banner and the Visconti family "grass snake" ("Biscione" in Italian). The first car to sport it was the 24 HP, a model that stood out from the very beginning for its mechanics, performance and driving pleasure - features which will become by-words for the brand.

Nicola Romeo

The outbreak of World War I and limited resources created trouble for the company, which was acquired on 2 December 1915 by Neapolitan engineer and entrepreneur Nicola Romeo. The name was changed to Alfa-Romeo. The Portello plant, with a workforce of 2500 workers, was expanded and converted to war production. The plant made engine compressors, ammunition, aircraft engines and - starting in 1917 - trains. The company went back to making cars at the end of the war.

P2 Gran Premio 1925-1930

Alfa Romeo made a first important leap forward winning Targa Florio in 1923 (the brand's first of ten wins) with the RL TF, which was also the first appearance of the four-leaf clover (quadrifoglio in Italian) racing emblem, and then in 1925 with the P2 Gran Premio, that won the first Automobile World Championship in history, the first of Alfa Romeo's five victories.

Giuseppe Merosi

In the meantime, Romeo replaced Alfa Chief Engineer Giuseppe Merosi, who had created the first models and joined the company back in 1910, with Vittorio Jano, technical creator of the great Alfas of the 1930s.

Alfa Romeo P2

His debut model was the P2, which was followed by...

6C 1500 Super Sport

the 6C 1500 (1928)...

"6C 1750 Gran Sport

the 6C 1750 (1930)...

8C 2300

the 8C 2300 (1931)...

P3

and the Gran Premio Tipo B-P3 (1932), all models which greatly contributed to increasing the Quadrifoglio prize record and elevated the technical prestige of cars made at the Portello plant.

Vittorio Jano

Vittorio Jano was responsible for the legendary "8C" eight cylinder in-line engine with supercharger.

Tazio Nuvolari

The 1930s were the years in which the Alfa Romeo legend took shape. Engine reliability was undisputed and the names of valorous drivers - Antonio Ascari, Gastone Brilli Peri, Giuseppe Campari, Enzo Ferrari, Tazio Nuvolari, Achille Varzi - were on everybody's lips. They won many legendary races: Mille Miglia (11 wins, an undefeated record), Le Mans 24 Hours (four consecutive editions), Targa Florio, and a very long list of international Grand Prix. In addition, the valuable indications arising from racing were transferred to standard production models.

The worldwide recession that followed the Wall Street Crash of 1929 had repercussions on Alfa's expansion: the company was taken over in 1933 by IRI (Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale - Industrial Reconstruction Institute). Ugo Gobbato was appointed Managing Director. He rationalized and reorganized production focusing on the core business of aircraft engines, industrial vehicles and touring and racing cars.

8C 2900A 1935-1937

The company left the world of racing in the year and its 8C2300B cars were given to Scuderia Ferrari. Results were brilliant: Alfa won more races than any other manufacturer in 1934, and racing even outshone standard production in 1936.

"Alfa Romeo D2

Aeronautic production reached nearly 80 percent of the entire yearly revenue. New orders came in, also from abroad, and a new plant was opened in Pomigliano d'Arco (Naples) at the end of the decade.

8C 2900 Le Mans 1938

The outbreak of World War II on 10 June 1940 unsettled the company's ambitious plans. As most Italian industries, Alfa converted to war production and its plants were bombed by the Allies (the Portello plant ceased operations all together following the damage it received on 20 October 1944). Work resumed the following April after the peace treaty was signed but the workshops had been damaged and there were no components for making aircraft engines, coaches or cars. So the eight thousand workers of the Portello plant made electric cooking ranges, metallic furniture, doors, windows and shutters - in other words, the objects needed to rebuild a country.

6C 2300 Mille Miglia

Auto building was resumed only in 1946. Pre-war 6C 2500s rolled out of the factory and 158s salvaged from the debris raced on tracks.

6C 2500 Super Sport Villa

New versions (Freccia d'oro and Villa d'Este), fitting an innovative steering wheel mounted gear shift, soon arrived.

1900 Super Sprint

The 1900, the first Alfa with monocoque body shell, was designed by Orazio Satta Puliga (who had joined the company in 1938) in 1950, and the first assembly chain was opened at the Portello plant.

Racing wins multiplied

Alfa Romeo 158 1947-1950

The supremacy of the Alfa 158 in Grand Prix was absolute and Nino Farina won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1950.

Tipo 159 Alfetta

In the following year was legendary Juan Manuel Fangio's turn: he won the second Championship behind the wheel of an Alfa Romeo 159 fitted with the most powerful 1500 engine ever made delivering 425 HP at over 300 km/h.

C52 Disco Volante 2000 Spider with Tyron Power

Straight afterwards, Alfa decided to retire from Grand Prix competitions but kept on competing in the Sport category with the 1900 Disco Volante, a flying-saucer shaped car capable of reaching a top speed of 225 km/h. In the meanwhile, the company concentrated on the production of standard cars, industrial vehicles, aircraft and naval engines, and diesel engines for industrial applications. Following the IRI reorganisation in 1948, Alfa passed into the Finmeccanica sub-holding.

Giulietta Sprint

Giulietta Sprint was introduced in 1954. This car - along with...

Giulietta Spider

the Spider (1955) and...

Giulietta Berlina

the berlina (1955) - would be crucial, and not only for the history of Alfa: it established new parameters (this was the first standard production car with a twin cam engine entirely made of aluminum) and embodied Italy's willingness to emerge from the dark years of the war.

All Aluminum Twin Cam engine

Furthermore, it consolidated Alfa Romeo's vocation as "major auto maker".

Giulia Berlina 1962-1978

The 1960s started with the success of the Giulia (1962), which developed the philosophy of the earlier Giulietta with new proportions, forcing Alfa Romeo to expand the shop floor and open a new plant in Arese near Milan.

At the end of its long, honored career, Giulia and its spin offs ...

Orazio Satta Puliga Legacy

The 1960s were florid years for the company: cars were sold worldwide and ties with the United States market - still particularly lively today - were consolidated. As a result of the forward-thinking managerial skills of Giuseppe Luraghi, CEO until 1974, and the remarkable engineering skills of Orazio Satta Puliga, Alfa Chief Engineer, who created all the models up to the "Alfetta", Alfa Romeo reached the peak of its development. The Portello plant, by now incorporated in the spreading city of Milan, was insufficient. Production was gradually transferred to the new plant (with an area of over two million and a half square meters) which was opened in Arese and a prototype test track was opened in Balocco (Vercelli).

Pomigliano d'Arco

Following the high increase in demand, Alfa Romeo planned the opening of a new plant in Pomigliano d'Arco (Naples): the foundation stone was laid on 29 April 1968.

Rudolf Hruska

Engineer Rudolf Hruska was called to design a new car:

Alfasud Sprint Grand Prix

Alfasud Ti Trofeo

Alfasud Sprint 6C Prototipo

the "Alfasud", a compact entry-level car equipped with a number of sophisticated mechanical solutions (flat-4 boxer overhanging front engine), was introduced in 1971.

Alfetta

Production of the Alfetta started in Arese the following year.

Alfetta Chassis

This sporty saloon with sophisticated mechanics (longitudinal front engine, rear wheel drive, De Dion rear axle and transaxle) was leader in its segment for many years...

Alfetta GTV

the "Alfetta GT (1974),

New Giulietta 1977

followed by the lower segment New Giulietta (1977) saloon, were the backbone of production at the Arese plant.

Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12

In the meantime Alfa Romeo took two World Championship titles: in 1975 with the 33 TT 12 (Manufacturers Championship), and in 1977...

Alfa Romeo 33 SC 12 1977*

with the 33 SC 12 (Prototype Championship).

The Alfetta GTV6 2.5 (1980) became Alfa's flagship performance car during the 1980s, winning numerous races and championships including four consecutive European Touring Car Championships.

33 Permanent 4

Troubles deriving from the social unrest of the seventies were felt across Italy and in Alfa Romeo. Despite this, the company pulled ahead preparing models and strategies for the forthcoming decade: the "Alfa 33, replaced the "Alfasud in 1983, the remarkable Alfetta was replaced by...

Alfa Romeo 75

the "Alfa 90 (1984) and the "Alfa 75 (1985), the last of the Alfetta family, was introduced to celebrate the brand's 75th anniversary.

Alfa Romeo 164

The company changed hands again in 1986, for the third time in its history. Fiat Group acquired Alfa Romeo, at that time producing the brand-new top-range saloon 164 (1987).

164 Interior

The car's success would revive Alfa Romeo and the Arese plant.

155 V6 Ti DTM

1992 was the year of the 155, remarkably successful in races.

Alfa Romeo 145

The 145 was introduced to replace the 33 in 1994 and...

Alfa Romeo GTV

the sporty GTV and...

Alfa Romeo Spider 1995

Spider were launched the following year.

156 GTA

The model of the 1990s revival was the 156 (1997). The sports sedan is the result of a new style and top-notch technical contents (like high double-wishbone front suspensions and common-rail diesel engine): it was sensationally successful on the market - awarded Car of the Year in 1998 - and on international race tracks taking many wins in the Touring category.

Alfa Romeo 166

The 166 replaced the 164 in 1998, and...

Alfa Romeo 147 GTA

147 GTA

in 2000 147 (also Car of the Year) replaced the 145 and was even more successful than its "big sister" the 156,

Alfa Romeo GT

that in the meantime had complemented the range: the GT, a four-seat coupe, with a style concept reminiscent of the Giulietta Sprint, was introduced in the Autumn of 2003.

Alfa Romeo 159 - beautiful from the front...

and rear

In the 159 replaced the 156 in 2005, evolving its style and implementing new proportions, engine versions and body configurations:

Alfa Romeo Brera

the "Brera coupe was introduced in the same year, followed by...

Alfa Romeo Spider 2008

the new Spider in 2006.

8C Competizione

Again in 2006, Alfa Romeo introduced the long-awaited 8C Competizione, a very high performance coupe with a remarkable design that made it an instant classic. With only 500 units made, this supercar was for collectors and a handful of lucky owners.

8C Spider

It was joined by the 8C Spider in 2008, which maintained the same mechanical features and performance as the coupe.

Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde

The Alfa Romeo MiTo, a compact car with a sporty look, for young motorists and everyone who want a distinctive, performing car, was introduced the same year.

Giulietta Quadrifoglio

Now is the turn of the brand-new Giulietta with the aim of reviving the brand in one of the most important segments in Europe.

In the centenary year, the name is a tribute to an automotive legend which was key in the history of Alfa Romeo: the Giulietta is a car that, in the fifties, caught the imagination of generations of car enthusiasts, making the dream of owning an Alfa Romeo and enjoying the high level of comfort and technical excellence accessible for the first time.

The Alfa Romeo Style Centre has designed the new Giulietta, a five-door hatchback with an unmistakable Alfa Romeo look, capable of expressing both great agility on the most demanding routes and providing comfort on everyday roads. This is the merit of the new "Compact" architecture. Using sophisticated suspension technical solutions, a dual pinion active steering, top-quality materials and state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, the Giulietta achieves excellent levels of on-board comfort, dynamic features and safety (both active and passive).
