In a shocking twist, MINI has unveiled something that's actually mini. Jokes aside, the Rocketman concept draws inspiration from the original 1959 Mini and measures a compact 3,419mm long, 1,907mm wide and 1,398mm tall.
The overall design is a little busy, but the car has an attractive Bermuda grey body with exposed carbon fiber sections that hint at the concept's carbon fiber space frame construction. Furthermore, the Rocketman features a wraparound greenhouse, a glass roof (with optical illumination), LED headlights, projector-style taillights, and 18-inch lightweight wheels.
Even the doors have been given special attention as they are double-hinged and "pivot outwards complete with their sills." Additionally, the two-piece tailgate has a lower rear section that opens outwards like a kitchen drawer. This unique feature allows the drawer to remain in the extend position so the Rocketman can accommodate four passengers and their luggage.
Inside, the cabin boasts a 3+1 seating arrangement which is practical but probably not comfortable for those stuck in the rear. Despite this, the interior is awash with high-end style as there's leather / Alcantara upholstery, carbon fiber accents, painted trim, and fiber-optic lighting.
For techies, the Rocketman features a 3D infotainment system, internet connectivity, and a trackball that is integrated into the steering wheel. More importantly, the central control unit "can be taken out of the car and configured on a computer before the journey begins to update navigation destinations, the music playlist or contact details for mobile communications."
No word on what powers the concept, but MINI hinted the Rocketman is capable of having an average fuel consumption of 3 L/100km (94 mpg imp / 78 mpg US).
