It�s hard to understand why one needs a personalized number plate, unless you are a celebrity. However, it�s a bit different with our Middle Eastern counterparts, where oil wells are the movies and Sultans are the celebs, who also happens to be car buffs. So, it came as a less surprise to know that the third most expensive license plate in the world was sold in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. A plate bearing solely the digit �7� was sold for $4.6 million, in a government auction, falling just a couple of million dollars short of the second most expensive plate, �5� (also sold in Abu Dhabi for $6.86 million), while falling way short of the most expensive plate �1� (sold to Emirati businessman in 2008 for $14.3 million). In total, 72 specialized plates were sold on Saturday and it�s needless to say that a custom license plate makes a great collectible.
