The Prada Marfa

Art... amazing things people do.

"The work will be located on the outskirts of Valentine, Texas near Marfa on desolate ranching land with no other visible trace of civilization. As one drives toward the artwork it will appear to be a large minimalist sculpture, as one gets closer it will look like a luxury boutique where a display of Fall 2005 high-heel Prada shoes and bags will be seen through the store front windows. Yet, one cannot open the door, it is a sealed time capsule and will never function as a place of commerce."

The Prada Marfa is situated along Highway 90 in the desert just outside Marfa, Texas. Yes, in the middle of the desert. It's really quite a sight to see what looks to be a Prada store in the middle of the desert!

It is a sculpture put together by artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingmar Dragset from Berlin to look eerily like a Prada store with minimalist white stucco walls and a window display housing Prada's hangbags and shoes (handpicked by Muccio Prada herself) from the fall collection.

Art Review, October 2005 calls this a "project about using existing icons and succintly juxstaposing them to form a seductively uncomfortable personality clash."

There are some really nice shots taken at that location. Must be quite a sight.
