SPY - First photos of a 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Klasse W166 test prototype
The first prototype of the next-generation M-Klasse made it out on German streets today.
Codenamed W166, the mid-sized SUV will be introduced in the summer of 2011 as a 2012 model. Although the camouflage is heavy, we can still judge some important lines in the design. For example, the newly-shaped, muscular radiator grille displaying 2 or 3 chromed slats, which embrace the big shiny star located in the centre. Mercedes-Benz will also most likely offer a set of LEDs for the daytime lights. From the point of view of overall dimensions, the future M-Klasse seems to highly resemble the current model;up to the moment, there appear to be no major changes.
Technically speaking, the 2012 M-Klasse will feature a new powertrain(strange as it may sound, it will be shared with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee!) and it will also benefit from Merc's latest infotainment, active & passive safety and dynamics technology. Along with the traditional internal combustion engines, the engineers also plan to offer a hybrid version for the next ML, available from the start of sales.
