City Car by Gary Siebel - Art Car covered in buildings

City on Wheels Art Car

City on Wheels Art Car with New York city in the background

Gary Siebel is the mastermind behind seven arts cars starting in 1985 with his first one called vanishing perspective. Since then his has created and amazing collection of art cars that seem to have a common tread, land scapes. Gary started out as a taxi driver in Seattle and after years of driving around town he came to appreciate the city's buildings. He also studied architecture in school and even though he never applied his knowledge commercially he did by making seven art cars over the past 28 years. On his first city scape car he spray painted a checkerboard landscape of a city as seen from above. Then he added the buildings on the roof, even ones that we were in the process of construction, just like in a real city. One the biggest problems he faced was vandalism and had hundreds of buildings stolen and damaged. This car was also featured in Harrod Blanks "Wild Wheels" book and movie.

Garry now resides in the SF Bay Area and has recently built the City Scape Van Art Car, that enables him to travel around the country more comfortably. In his latest creation he added lights to some of the buildings and the river is a picture of Salvador Dali. I have wanted to write about Gary and all of his art cars for a long time now and felt that his was work needed to be seen by many more people. Wow!!!

5:43 pm I just got an email from Garry with a more complete and accurate story regarding his cars. I was wrong about Garry having studied architecture he was more of a History guy, anyways here is the complete story. Thanks Gary:)

1st art car, 1987, the vanishing perspectivemobile. Totaled by a friend after I sold it.
I lost all respect for autos after pushing a hack for about ten years (hence, 1987), so I just started painting an ex-taxi. A friend suggested dead cat skins, but I rejected that idea.

Next art car also short lived, but I acquired a van (from the dead cat guy), and it went through many changes, from broken window paint job to more perspective to a pretty good brick wall rendition. Plus other schemes, so many I forget, and didn't care enough to record all the changes.

Vanishing Perspective Art Car

The City Car was the result of several factors: the urge to impress a particular babe, an artistic solution to a painting problem, a satire, a flight of fancy... and the fact I traded my semi-functional VCR for the car that had sat in front of my neighbors house for many months.. The artistic solution was the result of the vinyl top, upon which I could not continue to paint the map theme I had started, and the fact I had in hand 64 cut wooden blocks that were supposed to become a chess table, but instead looked rather like Main St when I started fooling around with them. The map led to the 1st City, which has never been any particular place --- but all my cities are grounded in castle Neuschwanstein, Disneyland, Las Vegas, New York, Shanghai, London, etc.-- all the major cities have a certain similarity of skyline.

City Car Art Car

The satire was simply a jab in they eye of consumerism and the cult of the automobile. They are merely transport, yet they are considered to be virtually another form of clothing, and what we wear in public is important. Taxis are trash, however, and by extension, all vehicles are trash because all vehicles are potential taxis.

A flight of fancy -- I always thought M C Escher ideas were rather clever, and his drawings worked because we can only focus on one limited area at a time, so my cities are impossible too, but plausibly arranged so as to work from various points of view.

After appearing in People Magazine, I found there were other art car people, including Harrod making his movie, so I wrote him a letter, and he came up to Seattle soon after because, as it turned out, he was wondering how to get in touch with me.. I sold the 1st City in Chicago not long after because I got tired of people ripping buildings off of it. Haven't heard of it since.(by then, I already had a stalker and I thought getting rid of the car would help get rid of her, too, to no avail.)

Next, and as result of a photo of the 1st Citycar appearing on the back page of Road and Track Magazine (plus the appearance in Harrod's movie, Wild Wheels) Hollywood paid me to create a "Seattle" car and appear in their Honda commercial. (It only appears to be the Seattle skyline view from the park on Queen Anne hill, on the passenger side. More futuristic from the driver side.) That was 1991... After the commercial was done filming in Seattle (filmed with Gene Pool with his Grass car, and some Chicken Car out of Louisiana), I insisted they take the car with them, so the last I heard it disappeared into LA -- probably crushed by now).

Seatle Art Car

After that I created the lunar surface on the Moon Car with the sawdust leftover from the buildings I had cut for the City. The Moon Car lasted for over ten years, and went through four phases: blue/gray, red, purple, and orange. It couldn't make it past smog so it was crushed by Ace in 2005.

Moonscape Art Car

Santana Row, San Jose, commissioned an extended golf-cart shopper transport thing in 2002, then they had the biggest fire in San Jose history, which I got to experience first hand because i had to save my City from the shower of tiny burning embers, but that piece also disappeared into history.

I built the current City on Wheels in five cities over three years: San Fran, Las Vegas, Seattle, Boulder, and Austin. the only help I received was in having a place to build (Hamman's Barn, S.F., Marston's Farm, Whidbey Island (where I also built the Moon Car), Albert's Enchanted forest, Austin, my sister's place in Boulder, and the streets and parking lots of Las Vegas). It is all cut wood, except for a few Monopoly houses driver side rear, and the plexiglas around the wood core of the two dark towers. Many bldgs have E-L wire lighting. No legos, and I pressure wash it to clean. Mileage is the same (the tower group, top front center, is actually set back to decrease drag, but the hood takes the brunt, i find).

I have always treated my wheels in the manner in which they deserve -- no precious art piece that I keep forever without making a new one, like a piece of 'art" mom put up on the family refrigerator from your first grade, that never gets taken down because, after all, YOU did it; no parades; keep it guerilla. I occasionally parked it in front of SFMOMA on a Sunday, ten paces from the front door, the only major art museum to have parking so close to it's front door, and left a comment book on it. I have been working a different side of the street, so to speak, than most art car people. I will delve into that aspect further at a later time.

Cars are vulnerable to the elements and the miles, and this one too, due to mechanical issues, is slated for imminent destruction. The wind is too harsh for the paint job on the front portion to retain it's luster for more than eight months. The glue, Lexel, has been impressive, and -- unlike the 1st City -- only a couple of bldgs have been stolen (bigger ones are screwed down) Registration expires Feb 2009. I designed it so I could strip the buildings off and reuse them. I cannot store it and refuse to dump more money into a pit. That's the risk of an art car -- indeed, of all cars -- sudden death syndrome, from any of a large number of potential reasons.

Garden Art Car Goes to Court

88 Oldsmobile Garden Art Car
This garden art car is headed to The U.S. Supreme Court that will consider an appeal next month from the owner of Planet K stores over his long-running battle with the city of San Marcos about his right to display it. In 2007 Michael Kleinman paid two artists to transform this salvage special in front of his store into a painted cactus planter art car. City officials got themselves hot and bothered, claiming the Oldsmobile 88 was in violation of a city ordinance declaring such displays public nuisances. The car was removed and Kleinman is appealing a 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in February that found the car-planter to be ultimately a junked vehicle.  Good luck with that!! via

Its funny I was going to do a garden art car post a while back and forgotten about it until my dad sent me this article two days ago. As you can see these are just a few of the garden cars I found from around the world. Most are intentional, some natural and the last one is purely accidental. If you like these you might also like the Grass Art Cars also on Art Car Central.

Aboriginal Toyota Art Car Basket made from Grass

Aboriginal Toyota Art Car Basket made from Tjanpi Grass
This Australian Aborginal Toyota Art Car Basket was created using Tjanpi Grass by the Tjanpi Weavers Group headed by Artis Kantjupayi Benson using a lesser-known Aboriginal weaving art practice.

The Grass Toyota art car ended up being 16ft long by 13 feet wide and 5m long, and 8.2 ft high and was was commissioned by the World Expo in Hanover Germany.

While Kantjupayi sat on a chair leaning on her long walking stick, she oversaw the younger women drawing the shape of the vehicle with chalk on the concrete floor of the Blackstone hall. Minyerri grass, a wiry grass found in the sandy country approximately 20kms from Blackstone, was used in the construction. The grass was fashioned into coils and attached with jute twine and wire to welded steel framed panels covered with chicken mesh. The steel frames were made by Perth sculptor Claire Bailey, adhering to the womens designs. All in all there were twenty artists involved over a month long period to realise the work and there was much celebration, hilarity and joy on its completion.

Updated Land Rover LRX Concept set for Geneva

1 | 2 | ?

The white LRX is conceived as a highly fuel-efficient 2.0-litre, turbodiesel hybrid, capable of running on bio-diesel. In combination with other Land Rover technologies, this powertrain could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 30% compared with other 4x4s of comparable size, and reduce CO2 emissions to approximately 120 g/km.

LRXs improved efficiencies are the result of advanced mechanical and electrical energy-saving elements, which are combined to achieve cumulative gains in many areas.

The concepts integrated Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) is particularly significant in Land Rover terms as it would allow LRX to use electric drive alone at lower speeds while retaining full (even improved) 4x4 ability in tough conditions. Unlike the hybrid technology used by some 4x4 rivals, Land Rovers unique solution retains mechanical drive to all four wheels.

Off-road, the ERAD would provide additional torque only when it is needed, and with maximum electrical torque from standstill, this solution offers even better low-speed control and enhanced pull-away on difficult surfaces (such as packed snow or wet grass) or when towing.

On the road, the ERAD would allow low-speed traffic creep up to 20 mph (32 km/h) on electric power alone, with the Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) function re-starting the engine automatically when needed. The electric drive would then continue to assist the mechanical drive until the engine is running in its most efficient range, benefiting both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The ISG would also stop the engine automatically when the vehicle halts in traffic, so the engine does not idle needlessly, and restart it quickly and smoothly as required.

The electrical drive system uses power stored in a dedicated high-voltage, high-capacity, lithium-ion battery pack, independent of the normal 12-volt battery. This is charged by a regenerative braking energy system, also working through the ERAD.

LRX also incorporates Hill Descent Control and Land Rovers acclaimed and user-friendly Terrain Response system, which optimises vehicle drivability and comfort, as well as maximising traction. On LRX, this has five modes, including the new and efficiency-focused Eco mode. Principally for on-road use, this configures all the integrated elements of the cars system for optimised fuel economy. The other four Terrain Response modes provided are sports (also new), general driving, sand and grass/gravel/snow (a single programme for slippery surfaces).

EXTENDING BREADTH OF CAPABILITY

The positioning of LRX could be described as moving subtly from traditional SUV to crossover, with its more car-like appearance and dynamics that are sportier and on-road biased. But while its character is underlined by excellent agility, handling and performance, LRX also promises the widest breadth of capability in the class.

The design of LRX was developed entirely in-house by Gerry McGoverns team, driven by a passion to create a car that truly represents Land Rovers future thinking. It has a very dynamic profile, with a distinctive taper to the floating roofline and a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, accentuated by the rising beltline. The glazing wraps right around LRX, with no exposed pillars, creating a bold design graphic. The architectural structure of the upper body can be glimpsed through the windows and roof echoing some of the best contemporary buildings.

Pushing the wheels out to the four corners helps give the car its purposeful stance, and its front-end design makes a powerful and instantly recognisable statement of Land Rovers identity. The carefully sculpted corners dramatically reduce the cars visual overhangs front and rear.

There are new interpretations of Land Rovers traditional clamshell bonnet, distinctive headlamps and perforated two-bar grille. The car has jewel-like, tapering blade indicator clusters front and rear, and the wheelarches are wide but softly integrated, housing highly polished, 20-inch alloy wheels.

The fine detailing includes additional polished aluminium in the form of side-strips, side and bonnet vents, and the exterior door releases, which are concealed in the cars shoulders. Graphic details such as these appear to be punched out of the smooth body surfaces rather than overlaid on them. The frosted white paint colour was especially developed for LRX and its visual depth helps to highlight the cars form.

IMPECCABLE, PREMIUM INTERIOR

The interior of the LRX concept clearly demonstrates how a compact Land Rover can still be roomy, practical, versatile and sophisticated. The impeccably executed cabin features a combination of soft leathers in rich tan and dark chocolate, with polished aluminium details, while the visible structures of the seats, instrument panel and roof architecture not only give a highly distinctive look but also help save weight.

The fast sloping architecture of the centre console reflects LRXs sporty dynamics, as does the distinctive binnacle over the instrument cluster. The electronic display uses floating LCD graphics to create a three-dimensional look that can be personalised for different drivers, as well as interacting with LRXs touch-screen display.

The instrument graphics present data in layers depending on their level of importance, to give maximum relevant information with minimum distraction? When appropriate, displayed information transfers between the main instrument cluster and the touch screen. Further adding to LRXs involving personality, different Terrain Response modes are matched by changes in the cabins background mood lighting colour green in Eco, red in sports and blue in general driving and off-road modes.

Wow, this Flower Art Car definitely takes best of flower show, a Ford Torus that was for sale last August in North Hollywood. It has a running waterfall, real live grass, plants, flowers, tiki torches, and a interior fish tank. Apparently its a great rental for the movie industry, business promotions, and parties and has received some media attention in the local news. When buying an art car its always good to have had media attention and have built a good reputation around town. The more famous the car the more you can expect to pay.

F1 Hockenheim - FRI - Free Practice (VMM)

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Hockenheim, Germany, Jul 23, 2010

LEWIS HAMILTON
- MP4-25A-04
- P1 programme: 8 laps, 1m29.429s (+3.728s), 17th
- P2 programme: 10 laps, 1m17.004s (+0.739s), 7th

Obviously, I damaged the car quite heavily this morning. It was very slippery and I hit the limiter coming out of Turn Three, shifted gear, which spun the wheels, and had an oversteer moment. Itried to correct it and that put me onto the grass, where I was just a passenger.

The accident took all four corners off the car, so I was a little bit upset with myself. The guys work so hard during the week to get the car ready, and then you get to the track, do a few laps, and total the car, which isnt great. It was a huge amount of work for the guys, too, but theyve just been phenomenal.

It was positive to get back out there and overcome the difficulties I had in the morning. We missed the afternoons rain too, which was good. Now I have a decent idea of where the car is, so hopefully we can make some positive set-up changes overnight.

The new blown diffuser still isnt perfect its not something you can just put on the car and drive with the same balance that you had before; youve got to alter the balance, and modify your driving style. Were still working on it, but theres potential there.

JENSON BUTTON
- MP4-25A-03
- P1 programme: 16 laps, 1m26.936s (+1.235s), 3rd
- P2 programme: 36 laps, 1m17.739s (+1.474s), 15th

This morning was useful, because theres a possibility of more rain tomorrow. But we didnt have a very good set-up for P1 in the wet we changed the car over lunch, and I was much happier with the balance this afternoon.

As always, we have to do things to make the car better. The long-run pace is pretty reasonable I think we were expecting more issues with graining on the Option, but it didnt seem to be a big issue. Hopefully, tomorrows morning session will be dry so we can focus on some useful set-up work.

Obviously, Lewis had a problem this morning, so I had a busy afternoon running through our long-run programme in P2.The new floor appears to be working well. We still need to look at the data to see how much of an improvement its giving us, but theres no negative to it, which is great.

MARTIN WHITMARSH
Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

Todays two sessions presented difficult and changeable conditions in which to conduct the necessary tests, but we nonetheless gathered a lot of useful data that will hopefully give us good direction throughout the rest of the weekend.

Clearly, Lewiss small error this morning caused damage to his car that took a while to repair, thereby limiting his running this afternoon. In the end he went out with just 13 minutes left, and did just one run on the Prime tyre. Nonetheless, he posted the seventh-fastest lap of the session and remains well placed to do a solid job tomorrow.

This afternoon Jenson knuckled down to a disciplined programme of long running on heavy fuel loads, concentrating on race durability.

We feel we have decent pace here and, as I say, having concentrated largely on long running on heavy fuel loads today, will focus on qualifying practice tomorrow morning.
