Maybach 57 & 62 FL to hit streets in 2010 ~ Could this be the swan song of the old luxury brand?
It is no secret that Maybach, otherwise a very exquisite premium manufacturer, has been a sales disaster for Mercedes-Benz, the company that owns it. Plans are to reveal the refreshed 57 & 62 models in 2010.
The information was offered by Dr. Dieter Zetsche, the boss of Daimler AG, who also gave the impression he was pessimistic about the future of the Maybach brand, by suggesting that, these days, customers tend to turn their attention to "discreet and subtle luxury". Moreover, he added:"The contribution of Maybach is not significant or relevant but there are only two players in this market and we are one of them. But there are no plans in the long run.", officially admitting the complete failure the Maybach project.
Too much resemblance with the "ordinary" Mercedes-Benz S-Class, no strong brand differentiation, a weak, or better-said, absent advertising campaign, the total lack of innovation pointing to assistance and infotainment technologies plus the old W140 S-Class chassis used as technical basis, and no intention in offering a more diverse car range(mind that the Exelero was never intended to be series produced)-all of them have contributed to the cursed situation Maybach struggles in. It is very possible that the 57 & 62 FL are bound to be the last models produced under this brand.
