Racing driver Stirling Moss celebrates his 80th birthday. He drove for Mercedes-Benz in one season, 1955 � an unforgettable year for the brand owing to the many, many triumphs.
September 1959 � 50 years ago:
Daimler-Benz AG began carrying out systematic crash tests at the Sindelfingen plant. Initially these took place in open air.
Other notable events:
24 September 1924 � 85 years ago: The world�s first diesel truck, a five-tonne truck from Benz, was put into service by Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart.
September 1939 � 70 years ago: Hermann Lang was named German Hillclimb Champion and European Champion, driving a Mercedes-Benz; his team-mate, Rudolf Caracciola, took the title of German Road Champion. This was the company�s fourth European Championship title since 1935.
17�27 September 1959 � 50 years ago: The O322 city bus with rear engine and air suspension premiered at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main.(more about the Mercedes-Benz bus history)
September 1964 � 45 years ago: The first of the Benz 600 (W 100) cars were delivered. This model series became an internationally sought-after representational car.
11�21 September 1969 � 40 years ago: The C 111 research vehicle made its debut at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main. Its features included a Wankel rotary engine and a plastic body. Two new passenger car models were also exhibited � the 300 SEL 3.5 and the 280 SE 3.5 coup� and cabriolet. The experimental OE 302 electric bus also made its first appearance. With the LP 1632 truck, Mercedes-Benz added the hydraulic tilting cab to its truck range.
16 September 1994 � 15 years ago: Engineer B�la Bar�nyi joined the Automotive Hall of Fame. He was responsible for a number of important inventions, many relating to improvements in active and passive safety.
