Talladega win puts Gordon past local great Earnhardt on career victories list

Jeff Gordon was greeted by beer cans as he crossed the Victory Lane of the Talladega Superspeedway Saturday, breaking a tie for sixth with the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. on Nascar's all-time win list. It was career win 77 for Gordon, which came as anticlimactic and confusing as his win last week at Phoenix was outstanding.

The Talladega fans, known for backing Earnhardt Sr. at the peak of his career, threw beer cans at Gordon's Chevrolet when it crossed the finish line. Is it over? Gordon was reported to have radioed in his crew. Is it over? Is it official? If it's any indication, the crowd's reaction was proof he got his 77th pole all right, rather unwelcome.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., son of the late seven-time champion, said: ''It don't look like it's something you can control.'' He took exception of the Talladega fans for throwing beer cans during the week, imploring his ''Red Army'' of supporters to instead toss toilet paper out of safety concerns. As a result of the ruckus, 14 of the fans were banned for life from the Nascar races.
