SPY - 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Klasse test prototype meets snowy roads
Launched 5 years ago, the current CLS is due for replacement in late 2010. Spy photographers have recently spotted a prototype of the next generation undergoing winter testing programme.
The new CLS-Klasse is expected to hit the market at the end of 2010 as a 2011 model. The sexy 4door coupe from Stuttgart will grow in size compared to the current generation, but will certainly retain its curvaceous and bold body styling that made it so popular among customers. Sharper wheel arches, a more proeminent front end grille, the already-known appealing and refined stance, premium materials for the interior and a big load of the latest Merc technology will, for sure, reconfirm the CLS's top market position in this niche segment. Some say the new CLS-Klasse could use the technical platform of the future W222 S-Klasse, but we think it is quite hard to believe that, given the fact that the test prototypes for the next-generation of the Stuttgart flagship haven't made their debut on streets. That's why, a modified W212 E-Klasse platform for the 2011 CLS sounds more fesable.
The new 4door coupe will be powered by a range of new or updated V6 and V8 units, including the long-vowed BlueHYBRID version, that will borrow the technology from the upcoming S 400 BlueHYBRID. For the speed & adrenaline aficionados, Mercedes-Benz will also offer a sporty AMG variant for the second generation of the CLS-Klasse.
