Fiat 500 news: Targeted market areas announced and dealer introductions...

Chrysler is holding an open house for select dealers to show off the new Fiat 500. Scheduled August 30th, the presentation will introduce these prospective Fiat dealers to the Fiat 500 and go over Fiat's plans to re-enter the US market.

Revised date

Notable in this Chrysler press release is the revised date of when the new Fiat dealers will be announced, which has been pushed back to October from the previously announced September.

Dealer's concerns

Also, the separate facilities requirement has been clarified to separate sales and display at launch and eventually a new facility as volume grows. This clarification will ease the concern that some dealers expressed in having to immediately invest in a separate Fiat facility.

New car dealerships are extremely expensive to build and maintain. Building a modern dealership is measured in the millions of dollars. Paying for all that selling a $20,000 car that nets 10% was a legitimate concern. Remember, Fiat estimates about 50,000 Fiat 500s will be sold in North America, it's going to be hard (impossible) to pay for a new facility selling 12-15 cars per month.

Now, with this easing of the separate facility requirement at launch, this gives dealers breathing room so they can ramp up their facilities for the eventual re-introduction of Alfa Romeo in 2012. Adding Alfa Romeo will increase sales volumes and help pay for the new facilities.

Being concerned about how much a dealer makes might be distasteful for some, but remember, we all want to have a nice dealership experience. Clean, modern, with loaner cars and top notch service. To get this costs money and our neighbors and friends who work there need to get paid for working hard. Keeping the dealerships profitable goes a long way in guaranteeing a happy customer.

Targeted markets revealed

Great news is the publication of the targeted market areas. They are listed at the end of the press release. Hope you're in one of the areas!

Below is the Chrysler Press release:

Chrysler Group LLC Invites Dealers to Fiat Experience

*About 600 Chrysler Group LLC dealers invited to the Fiat Experience
*Chrysler Group to present details on Fiat retail network plans
*Interested dealers to submit Fiat dealership proposals in September
*Dealers to be chosen for Fiat franchises in early October

August 9, 2010 , Auburn Hills, Mich.

Chrysler Group LLC has invited about 600 of its dealers to attend the Fiat Experience on Aug. 30 in Detroit as it takes another step closer to reintroducing the Fiat brand starting with the New Fiat 500 in the United States later this year.

The approximately 600 dealers were informed today that they are in one of the U.S. markets where Chrysler Group is currently planning representation for the Fiat brand. Chrysler Group has identified 119 markets in the U.S. with strong small-car registrations and growth potential in the small-car segment over the next five years.

The Fiat Experience will provide the dealers with a comprehensive overview of Chrysler Groups plans for Fiat in the U.S. Dealers may submit proposals for a Fiat franchise through Sept. 22.

The requirements for Fiat are straightforward: separate sales and display at launch, transitioning to a full dealership facility as the volume grows, said Peter Grady, Chrysler Groups Vice President of Network Development and Fleet. Our goal is to establish a retail network appropriately sized to serve the market opportunity.

Laura Soave

The email was sent to dealers today from Grady and Laura Soave, Head of Fiat North America.

Chrysler Group, in selecting its Fiat dealers, will consider a number of measures, including:

*Dealer sales performance
*Plan for a separate Fiat facility
*Comprehensive marketing plan
*Compliance on dealer standards
*Proper capitalization

Chrysler Group will announce its Fiat dealers in the fourth quarter.

The latest Fiat and Alfa Romeo dealer news

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat and Chrysler, told reporters some non-Chrysler Group dealers may receive franchises to sell Fiats.

Marchionne spoke after President Barack Obama's appearance at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant on July 30th.

I think there's going to be a large part of the distribution that will be part of the Chrysler environment, Marchionne told reporters. There may be others that will not be Chrysler dealers.

Marchionne stressed that Fiat will be a standalone franchise.

The potential of Fiat is unique, he said. There is nothing Jeepish about the 500. It's an Italian car, and a Jeep is a Jeep.

Alfa Romeo News

He also said Fiat franchisees could also get the Alfa Romeo franchise, which will return to the United States in 2012.

Back in April, I had the opportunity to pose a question to Marchionne on how Alfa Romeo would be marketed in the US.

I asked "What was the current thinking on how Alfa Romeo will be marketed in the US, would it be combined with the Maserati dealer network?"

Marchionne answered, "...that may happen with the Maserati dealer network, but I think the single largest source of distribution capability will come through the Chrysler organization and effectively the agreement I think we have with the UST (US Treasury) and with Chrysler requires that we allow Chrysler to distribute Alfa in the United States."

Dealer selection begins soon

Chrysler expects to select new Fiat dealers in about 125 markets identified for growth potential in the small-car segment. These dealers will be located in approximately 41 states.

Dealers in the target markets will be invited to attend a meeting this month at the Chrysler Group World Headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Chrysler Group plans to officially announce its U.S. Fiat dealer network locations in September.

New logo unveiled to celebrate Fiat 500 introduction in the U.S.

The Fiat Yamaha Team reveals new logo to celebrate Fiat 500 introduction in the U.S.

Fiat Automobiles and the Fiat Yamaha Team revealed to the world the new livery for the 2010 U.S. MotoGP race. The special graphics, commissioned by Fiat Automobiles and shared with Yamaha Motor Racing, celebrate the upcoming introduction in the U.S. of the most famous Fiat vehicle, the Fiat 500.

Worldwide fans of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, the two riders of the Fiat Yamaha Team, were given a chance to become active participants in the creation of the new livery by submitting photos of their smiling faces through a special website. The special graphics would incorporate 500 fan photos on each motorcycle and a selection of photos on the riders leather racing suits.

The response was immediate, and in only 15 minutes, the 500 available spots on Valentino Rossis bike were reserved. It took only a few more minutes to also cover all of the spots on the Spaniard Jorge Lorenzos bike. It was the work of famous designer Aldo Drudi to integrate these images with a special glittered stars and stripes version of the Fiat 500 logo, which is prominent on both of the bikes, the riders suits and the teams official clothing.

The initiative was inspired by the Fiat 500 Millesima recent online activity at 500millesima.fiat500.com, which was created to celebrate the production of the first 500,000 units of the new Fiat 500 in only 31 months from its launch. For this occasion, a unique Fiat 500 show car was also covered with the smiling faces of 1,500 owners, celebrities or fans that in one way or another made the Fiat 500s success possible.

In North America, the modern generation of the Fiat 500 will be introduced at the end of 2010 and will offer customers uncompromising safety, fuel efficiency from its 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine, individualization options, quality and advanced technology, all wrapped in iconic Italian style.

The Fiat Mobile Experience

The neat thing carefully cultivated about the Fiat 500 is the ownership experience. It starts before you even purchase the car. Here's an example, it's called the Fiat Mobile Experience.

Making it's debut at the Fiat Lancia Unlimited car clubs 2010 national convention (the Fiat Freak Out), the Fiat Mobile Experience is a mini caf and Fiat merchandising store combined. Refreshments are served on one side and Fiat branded clothes and accessories are sold on the other side of this high style kiosk like structure.

The structure is quite elegant and striking (especially considering it's humble origins which you can read about below), and the Fiat merchandise features sophisticated Italian design.

The Fiat Mobile Experience is a nice way of introducing people to the 500's fun and sophisticated lifestyle. Keep an eye out for it at an event near you.

Here's the official Fiat North America press release on the Mobile Experience:

The Fiat Cinquecento Prima Edizione announcement was made during the national annual convention organized by Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited, North Americas largest enthusiast club for owners of Fiat Group Automobile vehicles. This year, the convention commonly known as the Fiat Freak Out was held in Asheville, NC.

Fiat North America was the title sponsor of the annual convention, which featured displays of more than 100 well-preserved Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo vehicles.

During the event, Fiat North America debuted the Fiat Mobile Experience a unique display that hosts both a caf station and a Fiat brand merchandise store.

Fiat fans attending the convention were able to enjoy complimentary gelato, espresso and cappuccino served by baristas. Visitors were also able to browse through and purchase various Fiat-branded merchandise items in a unique store area, finished in Fiat red and white colors and staffed by Fiat merchandising specialists.

The Fiat Mobile Experience display is constructed from a re-purposed auto-shipping container and will be seen at other future Fiat shows and exhibitions in North America.

Fiat North America CEO wows them in Asheville

Head of Fiat North America, Laura Soave, took time off of her busy schedule to visit the Fiat Lancia Unlimited (FLU) car club's national convention in Asheville, North Carolina this past weekend.

For those of us lucky enough to talk with her, she impressed us with her energy, enthusiasm and passion to bring Fiat back into the country.

Not an aloof corporate type, Ms. Soave took a genuine interest in what the enthusiasts had to say about the marque.

Here are some highlights of the brief conversation we had:

Good news for Fiat fans is she is committed to growing the brand

The American version of the 500 will be more refined, but will still retain it's iconic European looks

As for the Abarth, she could have had just the engine, but wanted the whole package

The Fiat 500 transcends many demographics, from kids just out of college to retirees

Canadian followers of this blog will be happy to hear that there is a little competition between Soave and Sergio Marchionne (who has dual Canadian and Italian citizenship) on which country, the US or Canada, will buy the most 500s

With her extensive experience in marketing, coupled with a strong background in customer relations, Soave is the perfect choice to lead the return of Fiat to the North American Market.

Thank you for your loyalty...

During the closing ceremonies of the FLU convention, Soave made a surprise announcement that members of the club would be given the first opportunity to place reservations and select their vehicle build number for the unique Fiat Cinquecento Prima Edizione (First Edition) model. A total of 500 of these collector-edition Fiat 500 models will be sold in the United States.

The Fiat Cinquecento Prima Edizione was developed especially with the Fiat fans in mind, Soave said. For over a quarter of a century, the members of this Club have kept the spirit of the Fiat and Lancia brands alive in North America through their unique and passionate support for true Italian design. We really value their loyalty, and the Prima Edizione is our gift of appreciation to these fans on behalf of Fiat North America.

The Fiat 500 Prima Edizione will be exclusively available in three colors: Bianco (White), Rosso (Red) and Grigio (Gray). These limited-edition Fiat 500 models will be equipped with a manual transmission and will feature an exclusive Prima Edizione badge. Each of the 500 Prima Edizione vehicles will feature a sequential VIN and badge according to production order.

Fiat North America will also offer other Fiat fans the opportunity to reserve their Prima Edizione model, up to a limit of 500, via a special website that will be made available at a later date through http://www.ciaofiat.com/.

New Fiat dealers being selected in the US starting today

Fiat 500 "Pop Up Store". Fiat is very innovative in marketing their brand in Europe

The big news today is that Chrysler is beginning to select dealers to sell the new Fiat 500! As I've reported before on this blog, only select Chrysler dealers will become Fiat dealers. The best of the best, these Fiat dealers will be located in key areas targeted for their potential growth in the small car segment.

What I particularly like is the Fiat dealers will have separate facilities with a dedicated sales and service staff.

Chrysler will announce these new Fiat dealers in two months, during September!

Without further delay, check out the official Chrysler press release:

Chrysler Group LLC Begins the Process of Establishing Fiat Dealer Network

Select group of dealers will be chosen for U.S. Fiat dealer network

Fiat dealers to be located in markets targeted to the small-car segment

Fiat dealers will be located in up to 41 states

Dealers in targeted markets will be sent application guidelines and proposal deadlines this month

July 5, 2010 , Auburn Hills, Mich.

Chrysler Group LLC has begun the dealer selection process for the reintroduction of the Fiat brand in the United States.

The Fiat brand in the U.S. will feature the New Fiat 500, which recently celebrated the 53rd anniversary of its introduction in Europe. Dealers will begin selling the iconic Fiat 500 late this year and the Fiat 500 Cabrio in 2011.

Chrysler Group expects to select dealers in about 125 markets identified for growth potential in the small-car segment. Fiat dealers will be located in approximately 41 states.

The Fiat dealer network will be appropriately sized to serve the market opportunity, said Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development and Fleet, Chrysler Group LLC. Our vision is to establish a dealer network that will reflect and enhance the brands reputation for innovation and fun, and will offer a unique, personalized customer experience.

Chrysler Group will send Dealer Application Guides to dealers in the identified markets containing specific Fiat dealer requirements and instructions on submitting a proposal. The guide presents details on facility, sales strategy, accessory sales, service and parts departments, training curriculum and financial requirements.

Dealers must demonstrate how they will market, sell and service Fiat vehicles with a new customer service model. Basic guidelines include.

This video is a little bizarre, but check out this Fiat dealer's facility.

Location The majority of dealerships will be located in the identified markets

Eligible Dealers Proposals from Chrysler Groups best performing dealers will have preference in the identified markets

Dealer Performance Chrysler Group will evaluate interested dealers on volume performance, minimum sales responsibility accomplishment, capitalization and overall Dealer Standards score. In addition, the company will individually evaluate the proposed facility and customer handling metrics.

Fiat Facility A completely separate facility will be required to represent the Fiat brand.

Fiat Team A separate Fiat team will be required to sell and service the Fiat brand.

Fiat Standards Fiat standards will be unique from existing Chrysler Group Dealer Standards.

Financial Dealer candidates will have to show that they have the financial resources necessary to support the introduction of the Fiat brand.

Dealers in the target markets will be invited to attend a meeting in Chrysler Group World Headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich. Chrysler Group plans to officially announce its U.S. Fiat dealer network locations in September.

New Spy Shot of the Fiat 500

Here is the latest spy shot of a few Fiat 500s being tested in Poland. This shot was taken near Skoczw, which is about an hour from the 500 factory in Tychy, Poland.

The picture shows four cars with masking only on the front. Under the masking of these test mules, it is speculated that there are differences in the bumper, smaller lights and air vent. Now, this could be for the upcoming face lift scheduled in 2012 or, as noted in the forum posting this picture originated from, a revised bumper intake needed for the new TwinAir engine.

However, I have an additional theory, could these cars be testing bumper changes for the US 500?. Crunch time is rapidly approaching and we should expect to see test mules with different (presumably US) front ends showing up near the factory.

For a moment, let's take a look at the production time line. The US version of the 500 is scheduled to go into production December 13, pre-production models typically come out 2 months before, so that puts us into October (pre-production cars are vehicles used to validate production procedures and to shake out any issues before a car goes into series production). This leaves us approximately four months to order, manufacture and ship stamping and tooling to Toluca, Mexico.

Having said this, of course, it is all speculation and there are a couple of caveats with the above time line. First, pre-production is typically 2 months on a brand new vehicle, the Fiat 500 has been in production for 3 years, so it might be less than 2 months. Second, Fiat has been working on bringing the 500 to America for the past year, so production plans are well under way.

Well, stick around because it's going to get exciting in the next few weeks!

A question to ponder...

Here's a great comment I have to share...

Terry said...
Ah, what a dilemma. Paraphrasing the Bard, "To buy or not to buy, that is the question--Whether ts nobler to buy the 500 in December or to wait for Abarth anon---Whether to Harmannize or wait for Carlo to appear in the wings...To wait, ah there is the rub, for watching 500's on the highways and byways while driving lessor steeds would be agony, but being Abarthized would be sweet revenge!"

Terry, thanks for that comment...it's perfect....

New Fiat - Chrysler Mobile App coming soon

Earlier today, Chrysler announced it will make an enhanced owners information application available for folks who own a smartphone. Besides an owner's manual, other features will be included such as product literature, detailed feature descriptions, photos, videos, frequently asked questions, and the ability to set up service appointments and purchase parts.

It is ingenious and gives owners the ability to quickly access information about their vehicles at all times. For potential owners, it provides all the product information one could ask for.

The first application of this will be for the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, starting on June 19th, with other models to follow, including the Fiat 500.

Below are the highlights of the web conference held today by Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLCs service, parts and customer-care brand.

************ Begin Transcript ************

Speaking: Pietro Gorlier;

Last year, we were the first to replace traditional owner manuals with DVDs and user guides - - - saving 930 tons of paper or 20,000 trees on an annual basis...

This morning, Im pleased to announce that we are taking owner information and customer care to a new level. We will be the first in the industry to introduce free, downloadable vehicle owner-information apps for smartphones. Our first owner-information app will be available in the next couple of days for our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Following Jeep Grand Cherokee, owner-information apps will be made available on future Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Ram Truck vehicles in the U.S...

The app will first be available on Apple iPhones, and then on Blackberry and Android devices. Major mobile carriers include AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint...

In addition to providing general vehicle information, we are creating a new on-demand channel of communication with our customers to communicate about our brands, vehicles, and customer service...

Its also a channel where potential customers may download our apps to learn about our brands, our vehicles and all of their features and benefits...

Creating this new channel of communication will enhance the customer experience. Its a great example of how we can add value to our vehicles and build brand identity...

The app combines owner manual information with product literature and
includes detailed feature descriptions, photos and videos ...

There are a variety of categories including information on the vehicle operation,
instrument panel information, vehicle maintenance, service contracts,
customer assistance, vehicle highlights, frequently asked questions, Mopar
parts and accessories and more...

[Comment From Mark Boyadjis Mark Boyadjis : ]
Will the app be free to users? Can anyone download it, or only new customers?

Yes. It is FREE... This app is available to everyone - - - you do not need to be a current Chrysler vehicle owner to download and use this application. In fact, we view this app as an opportunity to communicate with potential customers about our brands and our vehicles.

[Comment From Chris@car-evolutioncars Chris@car-evolutioncars : ]
When will this go live?

The Apple iPhone/iPod touch version will be available on June 19 to support the launch of our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee...

Blackberry and Android versions will follow. We will then make owner-information apps available on future Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Ram Truck vehicles...

We want to take customer care to the next level ... and make the customer experience easier, and we wanted to promote the features of our new vehicles...

[Comment From Chris@car-evolutioncars Chris@car-evolutioncars : ]
Besides i-Phones, will this be available on an internet site and if yes will it be a new site or an existing one?

Right now, our primary focus is on the smart phone market, and capitalizing on the growth of that industry.

[Comment From David Hakim David Hakim : ]
What will be the next vehicle in the Chrysler line up to have this feature?

Going forward, apps will be available across all of our brands on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, starting with the launch of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

[Comment From Mauricio Mauricio : ]
Could the costumer order parts or accessories with these apps?

Yes, absolutely.

The customer can connect to our Mopar e-store, order parts, and have them delivered it to their home through our dealer network.

************ End Transcript ************

I cannot wait to see this app for the Fiat 500. I'll let everyone know when it is available.

Breaking news on the Fiat 500 and 500C: Production Dates...

In the interest of keeping people who follow this blog informed, here's the latest:

The Fiat 500 sedan is scheduled to go into production on December 13, 2010. Now this date has been around on the internet so it's not big news, however, according to an anonymous source, the Fiat 500 will be badged as a 2012 model and this production will run to July 2012.

The Fiat 500C... Just in time for summer 2011!

For fans of the open top Fiat 500C, the breaking news is there is confirmation that production will start March 28, 2011 and will end at the same time as the 500 sedan, in July, 2012. The 500C will also be marketed as a 2012 model.

The end of production of both the 500 sedan and 500C in July 2012 corresponds to a major refresh of both models in Europe.

The Fiat 500 and 500C are due for a redesign in 2012

After the July production is over, we can assume that the new redesigned 500 will be phased in later that year.

You can keep up to date on launch information here. Launch info can also be viewed by clicking on the quick link on the upper left corner of this blog under "Popular Topics".

More Fiat 500 spy shots ...

Our friends at Automobile Magazine caught a few pictures of the Fiat 500 being tested on the roads around Ann Arbor, Michigan. Click here to read the story and view the pictures.

The pictures posted show a similar front end with the European version of the 500 and not the hybrid Abarth/regular 500 bumper previously leaked on the internet, and discussed earlier on this site. You can read that post here.

One thing noticeable at the back of the car is a new round tailpipe. Now whether this will make it to the final US version is, of course, unknown, but it is something to keep an eye on.

As the 500 gets closer to production, expect more spy shots and we'll see if the hybrid bumper shows up again. I have the feeling it will;)

Fiat 500C spy video

Here is a spy video taken a few days ago of a Fiat 500C undergoing high altitude testing in Colorado.

In the above video, the exterior doesn't show any noticeable differences from the Euro 500C. Of course, that might change as there is talk about a modified bumper to meet US license plate and other standards.

Currently the 500C is due out next year, probably just in time for summer

Inside Fiat's Dual Dry Clutch Transmission

Alfa Romeo MiTo DDCT shifter

In April, I reported the Fiat 500 will be getting a version of the new Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (DDCT). Here's more about this transmission.

The 6 speed Dual Dry Clutch C635 transmission debuted this spring in the B segment Alfa Romeo MiTo, with the C segment Alfa Giulietta following. This transmission will eventually show up in the next generation of B, C and D segment Chrysler products coming to showrooms next year. Just recently, Fiat announced the Fiat 500 will receive a smaller version of the Dual Dry Clutch Transmission , this time with seven speeds.

Questions

There are questions concerning this smaller DDCT as far as which model 500 will get it and when. This seven speed DD CT is a natural for the Abarth but it is not exactly clear if it will get it. Curiously, this sporty transmission will initially have a torque capacity up to 140lbs.ft. (190Nm). That is suitable for 500 models with TwinAir, 1.2 liter, 1.4 liter and 1.3 liter MultiJet engines, however, 500 Abarth has a torque rating of between 152lbs.ft. (206Nm) to 170lbs.ft (231Nm), so it is assumed that there will be some changes to allow it to handle the added torque of the turbocharged 1.4 liter Abarth engine.

The New C625 TCT

Or could there be a totally new DDCT for the Abarth? Tucked away in Fiat's Five Year presentation, I discovered a new transmission mentioned. It is called the C625 TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) and is a DDCT type suitable for power levels between 148-184 lb.-ft. (200-250 Nm), exactly the torque range of the Abarth's 1.4 liter Turbo. There was no mention of this transmission during the presentation and not much is known about it, but, from what I have gathered in Italy, it is a smaller version of the C635 DDCT. We'll watch this one for you.

C625 TCT transmission listed, but not talked about

Another question is when will the 500 receive the DDCT? I mentioned in March there was talk in Italy that the US 500 will use the DDCT as the automatic transmission option and not the Dualogic semi-automatic. However, the smaller DDCT is not in production yet and the 500 is due out in 6 months. The question is will Fiat spend the money certifying the Dualogic for December and then latter next year, certify another transmission for the 500? Remember, each engine/trans combination needs to get certified by the EPA, a time consuming and EXPENSIVE operation.

We'll have to see how this all plays out, but here's what I think: My guess is the DDCT will show up in a US 500 at some point, but it might be in 2012, when a refreshed version of the 500 will make its appearance.

I can't see the 500 Abarth not having the DDCT. As far as time frame, the 500 Abarth is due out around fourth quarter 2011 and thats enough time to get it together for the transmission certification. So I wouldn't be surprised if the 500 Abarth would be the first 500 model to show up in the US with a Dual Dry Clutch Transmission (the C625 TCT).

What do you think? Feel free to post a comment below. In the meantime, let us explore Fiat's DDCT transmission as fitted to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

A look at the C635 DDCT

Click here to take you to a site that has a great short video on how a dual clutch transmission works.

The C635 DDCT has some notable features. With a torque rating of up to 260ft.lbs (350nm), it currently has the highest torque capacity of any dual dry clutch application on the market. It is also relatively light weight at 178.6lbs (81kg), complete with fluids.

Differential is mounted as close to powertrain centerline as possible

Special steps were taken to make the transmission as short and compact as possible. The center differential was moved closer to the engine. This allows it to fit multiple platforms, from sub-compact platform B cars to larger mid-sized D platforms. Center shaft distance is 197 mm, but there are versions from 181mm (181mm is the same dimension as the C510 transmission used in the 500 Abarth, making the C625 TCT a plausible assumption)

Shared components with manual version

The C635 TCT was developed alongside a manual version and uses some common elements such as the three-shaft layout, the casings, the synchronizers, and even the shift forks. This saves considerable manufacturing costs.

Dual Dry Clutch supplied by LuK GmbH

The C635 TCT uses the Dual Dry Clutch manufactured by LuK GmbH, the premier maker of this type of clutch.

The highlights of using a dual dry clutch is the elimination of the hydraulic support systems and the high efficiency of the dry clutch compared with that of a wet clutch. This enables significant savings in fuel consumption of more than ten percent when compared to the wet clutch and up to six percent in comparison to manual transmissions.

Hydraulic actuation module located in front

Below is the BorgWarner press release explaining their contribution to the C635. Interestingly, they mention three C635 variations, which matches up to a smaller unit for the regular 500, the Abarth's C625 TCT and the larger C635.
BorgWarner will supply the hydraulic actuation module for Fiat Powertrain Technologies' (FPT's) first dry dual-clutch transmission, one of three variants of the C635 family of six-speed gearboxes with 350 Nm maximum torque capacity, launching in late 2009.

Magneti Marelli and BorgWarner were assigned to the industrial development of FPT's innovative transmission control system, which employs a high pressure electrically-driven hydraulic pump and control solenoid valves to actuate the gear selection and engagement as well as the dry dual-clutch unit. Magneti Marelli supplies the control system to FPT, integrating BorgWarner's hydraulic actuation module into its own power and transmission control units. The transmission control strategies remain FPT's responsibility.

Characterized by compactness, speed and efficiency, the FPT transmission control system also uses BorgWarner's solenoid valves, employed for the last 10 years by Magneti Marelli and Fiat in their automated manual transmissions (AMTs).

Alfa Romeo TCT

Alfa Romeo introduced DDCT transmission in the MiTo and later in the just released Giulietta. Alfa Romeo calls this transmission the Twin Clutch Transmission (TCT). Here is Alfa Romeo's official press release on the TCT:

The innovative Alfa TCT - the latest automatic dual dry clutch 6-speed transmission - will be debuting in Geneva on the Alfa Romeo MiTo.

Developed and produced by FPT, Fiat Powertrain Technologies, this new device is part of a modern family of 6-speed gearboxes (C635) that was launched - in the mechanical version - on the 170 HP MiTo 1.4 MultiAir Turbo petrol.

Now it's the turn of the Alfa TCT teamed with MultiAir engines with Start&Stop system fitted as standard: indeed, the Alfa Romeo MiTo is the first car on the market to combine these three innovative technologies. Available from next spring, visitors to the show will be able to admire a 135 HP MiTo 1.4 MultiAir Turbo petrol with Alfa TCT and gear levers incorporated into the steering wheel (optional).

Video of engine and transmission cross section (music warning)

The new device, conceptually, consists of two gearboxes in parallel, each with its own clutch, which allows the selection and engagement of the subsequent gear while the previous one is still engaged. The gear is therefore changed with a simple gradual switch of the corresponding clutches, guaranteeing continuous torque delivery and therefore traction. The result is a driving comfort and sporty feeling well above those offered by conventional automatic transmissions (with torque converter), as proven by greater speed of gear shift, the possibility of selecting between manual or automatic mode and a near-zero power loss during the gear change. In addition, the purchasing, servicing and running costs are limited, while fuel consumption is reduced, thanks also to the implementation of the Start&Stop system, up to 10% less than a traditional automatic hydraulic transmission with torque converter.

Specifically, the Alfa TCT features the largest number of interactions with the vehicle's systems available on the market. Indeed, its operation interacts with the steering wheel, the brake and accelerator controls, the Alfa DNA selector, the Start&Stop system, the ABS, the engine and the inclinometer (slope detector to engage the Hill Holder and disable Start&Stop on activation).

Other peculiar features of the new Alfa TCT are its flexibility of application, thanks to the compact size of its components, and the fact that it is a dual dry clutch (the type of clutch that guarantees the highest degree of efficiency in terms of fuel consumption among all automatic transmissions). If we compare "Dry" clutches with oil bath ("Wet") ones, we can safely say that the former dissipate energy only during the actual slipping phase of the gear change and on pick-up, whereas wet clutches, which always operate in an oil bath, introduce losses due to viscous friction such as those of conventional automatic transmissions even when they are not in operation.

What's more, they require forced cooling with oil and therefore continuous energy expenditure to drive the dedicated oil pump (absent in the case of "Dry" clutches). Moreover, a "Wet" automatic transmission requires approximately 4.8 litres more oil than the "Dry" version, again for reasons of clutch cooling (in this way, weight is added and losses due to splashing increase). When all these effects are added together, a Alfa TCT is found to be approximately 6% more efficient than the corresponding "Wet" one in terms of consumption. Last but not least, the advantages of the "Dry" clutch include the lower cost and the increased ease of installation.

Lastly, it should be remembered that the new Alfa TCT boasts a generous 23 public patents split into 3 areas: gearbox control, gearbox mechanics and gearbox actuator.
