Nissan Leaf Wins Award For European Car Of The Year

Nissan Leaf takes away the title of European Car of the Year leaving behind all other hatchbacks and saloons standing in line.

Nissan Leaf is based on a high end technology base which is the major reason behind its superior performance making it the best in class option. The car is powered by a 120 bhp electric motor along with efficient lithium-ion batteries. With these strong figures, the car becomes capable of reaching the top speed of 145 kph and on one charge and can smoothly travel a distance of 175Km. The car not only considers the environment factor but also assures superior comfort to the users and that is the major reason why Nissan Leaf was able to beat top car models and grab the graceful title of European Car Of the Year. It comes with parking camera, advanced telematics, air conditioning system etc.

Press Release

100% ELECTRIC NISSAN LEAF PICKS UP EUROPEAN CAR OF THE YEAR 2011 TROPHY

The trophy recognizing the revolutionary Nissan LEAF as Europe's Car of The Year 2011 was handed over to Nissan Motor Co.'s President and CEO Carlos Ghosn in a special ceremony at the Pavillion Gabriel in Paris.

To win the award, the 58 CoTY members - leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries - placed Nissan LEAF ahead of six conventional new cars on the shortlist. It is the first time in CoTY's 48-year history that the annual award has been won by an electric vehicle.

"I am convinced that we will see other electric cars named Car of the Year in the future. But when we do, we must always remember that only one can be the first. And that is why Nissan LEAF Car of the Year 2011 is - and will remain - so very special," said Hkan Matson, president of the CoTY jury, speaking at the ceremony.

"It is a great honor for Nissan LEAF to be recognized as the European Car of the Year - the first all-electric car to receive this distinction. Like previous Car of the Year winners, Nissan LEAF is an appealing, competitive car, with no compromise on style, features, safety, performance or handling. Yet it stands apart as an innovative car that reflects a clear vision of the future of transportation - a vision of sustainable mobility," said Ghosn after receiving the trophy.

Nissan LEAF is powered by an in-house developed compact electric motor and inverter in the front of the car driving the front wheels. The AC motor develops 80 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, enough for a maximum speed of 145 km/h (90 mph). The electric motor is powered by an advanced laminated lithium-ion battery with a power output of more than 90 kW. Developed by the Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC), a joint venture between Nissan and electronics giant NEC Corp., the breakthrough battery has the capacity to store twice as much energy as the previous generation battery.

The zero-emission car is fully equipped with features such as regenerating braking, air conditioning, satellite navigation and a parking camera. Innovative smart phone connectivity will allow an owner to heat or cool the interior of the car remotely via a mobile phone. The single option is a solar panel mounted in the rear spoiler.

Pre-orders for Nissan LEAF have reached more than 27,000 units globally. The zero-emission car is currently built in Japan, but will also be manufactured in the United States and United Kingdom when new manufacturing facilities there open in late 2012 and early 2013 respectively. Deliveries to individual customers in Japan and the US began in December. In Europe, deliveries will start shortly to Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands followed by more markets later in the year.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance aims to be a global leader in zero-emission mobility and is taking a comprehensive approach encompassing both the product and the infrastructure required to support the mass marketing of electric vehicles. To date, the Alliance has entered into more than 90 partnerships with governments, municipal authorities and companies worldwide to prepare the markets and infrastructure for the successful adoption of electric vehicles.

* The current version of the coveted marble trophy, introduced in 2004, was created by Emmanuel Zurini, a French artist famous for his automotive sculptures. Zurini was a leading Grand Prix photographer in the 1960s before turning to sculpture in 1975. It is the third specially created trophy in the history of the Award.

Nissan has won the CoTY award before. In 1993, the Micra became the first Japanese-badged car to win the accolade and started Europe's love affair with the little car that continues today with the recent launch of the latest generation Micra in late 2010.

Future Fiat 500 Abarth engine wins Best New Engine of 2010...

The Fiat has won Best New Engine at the 12th Annual International Engine of the Year Awards.

Judged by a panel of 65 renowned motoring journalists from 32 countries, the Awards highlight and acknowledge engine engineering excellence.

This year they chose the Fiat 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo as the best in the New Engine category. This engine will be used in the Fiat 500 Abarth coming to the US some time next year.

You can read about how MultiAir works here and check out other stories about this technology here.

Below is the official International Engine of the Year Awards press release:

Fiat 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo

Fiats MultiAir, the single most innovative engine technology to appear in the past 12 months, has been rewarded by the Awards judging panel with the title of Best New Engine of 2010.

MultiAir employs an electro hydraulic system to independently control each cylinders inlet air charge. Depending on the driving situation, there are five main modes of inlet valve timing and lift, but in principle MultiAir enables infinitely variable control of the inlet valves.

The system is particularly special because it is able to increase power and torque while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The concept is therefore ideal for todays world of eco-conscious, downsized automotive powertrains.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies, which has developed and patented the system, claims that, compared with a traditional petrol engine of the same displacement, a MultiAir unit brings up to 10% more power and 15% more torque, while improving fuel economy by up to 10% and reducing emissions, whether they be CO2 (-10%), particulate matter (-40%) or NOx (-60%).

Taking as an example the 170bhp variant of the winning 1.4-liter turbo engine, which appears in the Alfa MiTo Cloverleaf, Alfa claims 6 l/100km (47mpg) on the combined cycle for the 170bhp unit, which is more than half a liter less than the previous 155bhp, non-MultiAir engine. A start/ stop system also helps cut fuel consumption levels.

The judges were predictably enamored with a system that offers such impressive benefits. Fiats MultiAir gives traditional internal combustion a breath of fresh air via an entirely new set of valve train strategies, was the verdict of respected technical journalist, Dennis Simanaitis of Road & Track.

Twin cylinder "TwinAir" soon to be installed into the Fiat 500

Fiat plans to roll MultiAir out across additional engine families. Next to benefit will be the eagerly anticipated two-cylinder turbo, which is on track to offer an astonishing 105bhp!

Scoring:

1. Fiat 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo (Alfa MiTo, Giulietta) 228

2. Ferrari 4.5-liter V8 (458 Italia) 200

3. Volkswagen 1.2-liter TSI (VW Polo, Golf, Seat Ibiza ST, koda Octavia, Yeti) 134

4. Mercedes-Benz 4-liter Hybrid (S400) 76

5. VW 3-liter TSI Hybrid (VW Touareg, Porsche Cayenne) 71

6. BMW 4.4-liter V8 (X5 M, X6 M) 68

The Fiat 500 wins top spot in Green Awards 2009

Fiat 500 Start&Stop

Two years after its introduction in 2007 the Fiat 500 keeps winning awards. This time it is the top award for superminis in the UK's "What Car? Green Awards 2009.

The award not only recognizes the most economical and environmentally friendly cars on sale in the UK but also a green car that is fun to drive, easy to own and practical for every day use.

The Fiat 500 Stop Start won the award for the best green car supermini.

The Start&Stop is an option on the Fiat 500, which gives the popular city car even better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures.

The new technology is based on the most successful 500 version the 1.2 Lounge and benefits from the combined expertise of automotive parts specialist Bosch and Fiat Powertrain Technologies.

Fiat 500 Dualogic

The Start&Stop system stops the engine automatically (without the driver turning an ignition key) whenever traffic conditions bring the car to a complete halt, and restarts it when the driver wants to move off again.

Fiat 500 Blue&Me

Fiats Blue&Me hands-free telecommunications and entertainment system is standard on 500 Start&Stop, which means the car also benefits from eco:Drive, the system that allows customers to monitor and improve on their CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures.
